Convert mono/stereo tracks to multichannel (7.1.4 etc)

Right now we can convert between stereo and mono tracks with one click, but cannot convert stereo to 7.1.4 (or similar).

This is currently a major pain point for me when starting new atmos projects by importing stereo stems, or converting stereo mix sessions to atmos.

Adding this feature would dramatically reduce friction in atmos session prep or conversion.

What would be the advantage, compared to dragging to a 7.1.4 track?
And can i ask how this should work? Mono to stereo creates dual mono output track (although the signal can be modulated). If on goes from stereo to 7.1.4 you would just get sound out of all speakers. How is that useful exactly? Why not use an upmix bus?

Advantages over dragging to a new 7.1.4 track would be

  • Not having to rename the track
  • Not having to move the audio
  • Not having to move the automation
  • Not having to move the inserts
  • Not having to move the routing/sends

You asked why not use an upmix bus… thats a clunky work around that adds clutter and complexity. Why would I do that if I could just change my stereo track to a surround track?

Check this
We shared a few additional videos demonstrating quick mono to stereo and stereo to 7.1.2 upmix tips using anymix in past.

Thanks for sharing! This is cool but not what im looking for

This request is rooted in the fact that i need to be able to use 7.1.4 inserts. Otherwise i would be fine just using VST Panner to pan the stereo tracks, or use sends.

Yes we absolutely need to be able to change channel widths as seen fit.
I recently updated one of my mix templates to Atmos, and it was really unnecessarily long to do, as I had to re-create groups and busses instead of just being able to switch their width to a different format.
