Converting accented appoggiaturas to before‑the‑beat

Post:

Hi everyone,

I’m working with a score that was imported from MusicXML, and I’m running into a layout problem with appoggiaturas.

What I’m trying to do

I want to convert a lot of accented (on‑the‑beat) appoggiaturas into unaccented (before‑the‑beat) appoggiaturas. Musically, I just want the little note to sound before the beat so that the main note lands on the beat.

When I move the appoggiatura back, it ends up overlapping or colliding with the last note of the previous measure. The spacing in that bar gets scrambled, and the grace note and the previous note start to fight for space. It looks messy and hard to read. I have many of these appoggiaturas imported from MusicXML (Finale Export). I tried note spacing in Engrave mode, but nothing is moving cannot reset the spaces.

Any advice on the correct notation approach and practical workflow for this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help!

There’s a property to allow grace notes to appear before the barline (There’s no need to move them)…

But be aware you cannot have grace notes in different instruments both before and after the same barline.
