If five different voices each on its own staff are singing the same lyric, can I copy paste somehow?
Yes.
Select the first lyric > Ctrl/Cmd+select the last lyric > press Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+A and it will select all the lyrics between. Then you can copy/paste.
There are other ways to copy/paste. You can do the same as above but instead of copy/paste, you can (with the lyrics selected) just Alt/Opt+click at the rhythmic position where you want the lyrics to begin. This is useful if you have identical rhythms to paste into.
You can also use the function Duplicate to staff above/below but you will either need to use the Jump Bar or create your own key command for this.
The Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+A is for Select More and this is for selecting more of the same item.
Those commands are in Edit > Paste Special.
Thanks so much! I’m very new to Dorico. I find that your method works very well up to a point. For example, it will paste (for example) from alto to tenor, but then refuses to paste into Baritone or repeat paste into Tenor.
It should do. Can you show a screenshot, and describe exactly which method you’re using?
I am on Windows 11, using Dorico 6. When I use the instructions above to select all of the lyrics, it also selects the notes. When I copy/paste, the notes from the “source” voice (Soprano), they get copied to the “target” voice (Alto) - overwriting the notes already in the target voice. How do I select just the lyrics and not the notes? … or how do I paste and prevent the existing notes from getting overwritten? I don’t see anything in Paste Special.
Welcome to the forum, @James_Kody!
The post above gives several different ways to select and copy lyrics – which ones aren’t working for you?
Alternatively, if you wind up with notes selected along with your lyrics, you can also right-click and do Filter > Lyrics > All Lyrics (or one specific line, if that’s what you want).
If you select notes and lyrics, and then use Alt-click or Paste, or Duplicate to Staff Below etc, then of course you will paste both the notes and the lyrics.
Either: Filter the selection, so that only Lyrics are selected – then you can paste just the lyrics;
Or: you can select Notes and Lyrics, Copy them, and then open the popover, where the copied Lyrics can then be pasted, one syllable at a time. (The popover automatically filters out the notes and other selected material.)
When I right click > Filter, I don’t have a Lyrics option!
You should do, if there are lyrics in the selection.
I got a little confused by the Ctrl/Cmd notation, but figured it out. So for anyone else puzzled,
Mac: Select the first lyric > Cmd+select the last lyric > press Shift+Cmd+A
Windows: Select the first lyric > Ctrl+select the last lyric > press Shift+Ctrl+A
Very glad to learn about this Select More feature. Hope I remember it!
Welcome to the forum, @schenfisch.
It won’t be the last one!
