Hi all, Not quite sure what to call this.
I frequently open old Finale files [as XML] in Dorico, and begin editing them. Very often bars will have the desired notes, but also rests in a second voice/layer. I can’t delete them. The only fix is delete all notes and rewrite them. Tedious and why should this be?
Also it happens sometimes in Dorico, when i copy notes from one staff and paste into another.
Again, not sure how to word this. Any help with terms is also welcome, along with any ideas about what causes a second voice to appear.
Hard to say without seeing your XML, but maybe these notes were in a different layer in Finale? It may also have something to do with this being a slash voice.
Turning on View > Note and Rest Colors > Voice Colors will make it easier to see what voices things are in in Dorico. You can also select a single note, and the bottom status bar will tell you what voice it’s in.
If things are in the wrong voice, you could try selecting those notes, right-clicking, and choosing Voice > Change Voice and then whatever option you want. You should also be able to select those bars and do Edit > Remove Rests.
If you’d like a more specific answer, please upload your XML and/or Dorico project file.

Hey thanks! I will try these things. I did not think they were slash voices, but maybe Dorico imports them like that from an XML file. But, it also happens when i copy from one instrument to another, within Dorico, so i dunno. Will try stuff, report back.
