Copying and pasting without losing playback data

I’d like to copy and paste a repeated section of music (a piano part). This passage already exists twice in the score. In the first instance, I’ve carefully adjusted the velocity values in the Play editor to shape the phrasing and balance the voicing. However, when I copy and paste the music, the second section reverts to the default velocity values. How can I copy the passage while retaining the playback data, specifically, the edited velocity values?

Do you have this set under preferences?

Hi Jesper,

I wasn’t aware of this setting but in any case, it’s enabled on my system.

When I copy music from the section where I’ve modified the velocity values, Dorico retains its default velocity values in the pasted section. :frowning:

Hm, it works here.

To confirm what I am seeing and hearing…

In the repeated section, the default velocity values for the upper staff (F chord) are:

56 / 70 / 51 — highest to lowest notes in the first chord. (I’m not sure why Dorico voices a chord this way, but that’s a topic for another time.)

In the first section, I adjusted the chord voicing to:

56 / 51 / 51

When I copy the modified chord using Cmd + C and paste it (Cmd + V) over the same chord in the repeated section, the velocity values remain unchanged. Dorico keeps the defaults instead of my edited values.

Is there a special command when copying/pasting music to retain the playback data?

I’ve just tried the exact same process in a new project and everything works as you describe. I wonder what might be different in the project I am working on?

Sorry for another post…

I’ve just tried the following:

  • Reset playback overrides in the repeated section - I can see, and hear, that the velocity values have changed.
  • Delete the repeated section.
  • Copy the first section to the please of the second.

The velocity values that were originally in the second part are retained!

This is just crazy.

I’ll need to send the project to the dev team for review.

A simple test confirms that something isn’t right: when a chord is copied from one place to another, the resulting velocity values are completely different. The changes can’t be explained by a shift in dynamics, for example, as the proportional relationships between the values don’t match.

The project was originally created in Dorico 5. I wonder if that might be contributing to the issue I’m experiencing?

I have triple-checked that the relevant preference is set:

Perhaps this can be explained by humanization settings?

Possibly, but the “default” values are very odd and make little musical sense. I’ve been using NP for piano up to this point and have always relied on Wallander’s usually excellent shaping and voicing. However, recent issues, following the 6.1 update and what seems to be some incompatibility with NP, have prompted me to explore other options.

It’s been refreshing to have more direct control over shaping and voicing, but I also value the efficiency NP provides. Now, after spending four or five hours refining a section of music, I just need to copy it elsewhere… and yet more issues arise, as described in this thread.

It hasn’t been a good week so far, and with deadlines approaching, the timing couldn’t be worse!
