Copying music frame

Having trouble copying a music part page. I tried to follow the ‘Copying frames’ help page but don’t seem to get any result.

Here’s what I did:

  • Inserted a page (with default template) after last page in an instrumental part.
  • Open Engrave - Frames.
  • Click the blue music frame (same default template) I like to copy. The music frame highlights.
  • Go to Engrave - Pages.
  • Select the last (earlier inserted) page.
  • Right-click this page and choose ‘Copy Seleted Frames to Selected Pages’.
  • Nothing happens.

Must be doing something wrong, but what? Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Not sure if it makes a difference but do you have any overrides on the page you’re copying to?

Are you trying to add music, or copy a layout?

From your description, it sounds like you’ve created an additional layout page after the pages with the music on it… ??? and then copied the layout of a music frame into that page.

No, not as far as I can see.

I’m trying to copy a music page. Isn’t the described procedure the way (according to the help page?) to do this?

Like this?

So you’ve created an override page with a music frame, but there’s no more music to fill it?

What do you want to have on this page?

In your example, I would like to copy the music from page 3 into the new page 4 (in my case the music frame sof both pages have the same size).

Hi Mike,
in Engrave Mode you deal with the Layout of your existing music.
In Write Mode you can copy and paste music.
If you like to duplicate some of your existing music, you will have to do it in Write Mode.

If you just want to repeat the music, then you would copy it in Write mode, adding extra bars to the score; and let Dorico add the extra page automatically.

It is possible to display the same flow again on the same layout, if that’s what you want; but that’s usually a rare circumstance.

Not quite. You can use additional Frame Chains to repeat music, but it’ll always start from the beginning of a flow.

Hope this helps. I would like to have a copy of these two pages, as new pages after the last. Copy-paste the music content of the pages in Write mode behind the last double bar ends up in weird results.

Hi,
it looks as if you like to copy and repeat this flow (which contains of two pages of clarinet music).
If you enter the Setup Menu, you can actually select that flow of music in the bottom panel and „Duplicate Flow” in the right click menu.
This way not only your music gets duplicated but also it’s Layout.

Hi k_b,
Thanks, but that’s not what I want to do. The Flow contains more pages which I don’t want to copy. If I copy the Flow, the score from which this part is from will have an extra Flow. Is there no way to simply copy an entire page, including music?

Dorico makes pages from the music you write. It doesn’t make music from the pages you add.

If you want more music, then you have to write more music. In Write mode, add one more bar, select the notes, and paste them into the extra bar. Dorico will add more bars to fit. Now delete your over-ridden page in Engrave mode, and Dorico will add extra pages for your new music.

You could essentially duplicate the Page Template but replace the music frame with one that does not start MA. That should cause the frame to restart the flow from the beginning and thus repeat the music. After that, reassign the original Page Template with the MA frame to continue as normal.

Thanks for your reply Ben,
The option of adding bars doesn’t work in my case because the part is the part of a score. If I add a bar to the part it is also added to the score, which I don’t want. I only want to add bars to the part.

Thanks for your reply and example Derrek, but I’m afraid I don’t follow. Probably because I’m not skilled enough in working with frames.

What @Derrek and earlier @pianoleo are referring to are Frame Chains:

There’s a great video at the end of the page.

In which case, I’d suggest adding the extra music as a new Flow, for just this part. You can de-select this Flow from all other layouts.

Frames are “containers” for music, like text frames or graphics boxes in DTP apps. Adding another frame doesn’t add more music: it just makes a page where music could go. Normally, you shouldn’t need to edit frames.

Thanks. The solution you give is in fact the same solution I just found. I added a flow for this part (which btw adds a flow for every part including the score) and then exclude this flow for all other parts including the score.
