Hello, I am finding that when importing an xml file created from a Finale file, Dorico is adding courtesy accidentals where there were none in the original Finale file and that are not needed. Is there a way to avoid this? I know how to manually remove them but it’s difficult on large works to spot every one and change it. Is there some setting I need to check? Or something in Finale I need to check before creating the xml file? Thank you.
Hi @Scherzo_Trading, did you try activating this Preference?:
If this doesn’t give the desired result, possibly you can customise the options in Notation Options>Accidentals.
Also, in combination with the other suggestions, if you select the affected notes (or just do Select All), you can do Reset appearance from menu Edit.
If all this doesn’t work it would be interesting if you could upload a PDF of the original Finale output, and the XML exported from finale (you can zip them together to upload)
Thanks, Christian. Accidental visibility is unchecked on my platform. I took the last sentence in the box, “In almost all cases,…” to mean Dorico recommends to leave this unchecked. I will try checking it and see what happens. Also, it appears there are some options one can do to the Finale file before exporting it to XML: Plug-ins > Scoring and Arranging > Canonic Utilities > Clear Frozen Accidentals. I found this in an earlier post from 2016: Strange XML Problem. I haven’t tried this yet but perhaps it will be a solution for as long as Finale is accessible.
If you check the Accidental visibility option for xml import, Dorico will force the appearance of accidentals to match the original xml by setting the accidental property to show or hide wherever it contradicts Dorico’s internal rules.
So, assuming the Finale file shows courtesy accidentals the way I want them, then checking the box will preserve those settings, correct?
The best way to avoid it would be to set the Notation Options for Cautionary Accidentals to a scheme that is what you want, rather than manually adjusting each one.
Yes it will.
Thanks. I do have Notation Options for Cautionary Accidentals set the way I want them but what I am finding (or rather the editors for my publisher/client are finding) is that cautionary accidentals are appearing in the Dorico file that were not there in the source file (the Finale file) that was submitted by the composer. As the engraver, I’m trying to catch as many as I can but would prefer not to have to scrutinize the whole score looking for cautionary accidentals that should not be there. If possible.
Thanks, Janus.
