Starting in Cubase 15 El. Every project is .cpr project. But I used to send several versions as .mp3, to listen to it somewhere else and adjust musictracks. (Cubase 9.5) Now I can’t get in my .cpr projects anymore. Unless I use a .bak version. But I just want to get on with the project where I left it. Is there a way to solve this? What am I doing wrong?

*.cpr extension is in use since Cubase SX, that means, for many many years. This means the Cubase PRoject.
*.mp3 is an exporter (and compressed) audio file.
Didn’t save my project correctly, but send it as mp3. Now I can’t find it anymore. There should be back up or bak files. Can’t find those either. Feel stupid.
Can you explain what you have done exctly ?
Did you export Audio in mp3 format or what does it mean that you have sent the projext as mp3. Did you rename the cpr file into mp3 ?
Just went from Cb 9.5 to 15 on new laptop Windows 11. Within the projects I am ok. But the saving proces is different. My first project I didn’t save correctly, but I did send a projectversion to myself in mp3. (I like to listen to several versions quietly in another room, just to have fresh ears, before finishing a project) After that I couldn’t get in anymore. Then I did a lot of things I can’t remember anymore, with the result I lost it completely. Somewhere there must be a back up. I tried all the Steinberg and AI suggestestions. Nothing works.
I wish there was a simple system and a step by step instruction on how to save a project on D hard drive, with a main folder and subfolders for my projects. That was what I had on my old laptop with Cb 9.5
PS. Strange how programmers that created Cubase and Microsoft etc, etc, are filling every screen up with so many info and possibilities. It is as if they are a bit autistic and don’t have contact with real customers. Very ‘user-unfriendly’
Then you probably deleted them or moved to another place you did not searched in. Because of the fact (you wrote) zou cannot find them.
As Martin said the .cpr files are here for years and you used it for sure. If not then you - probably - created a Project, worked with it, exported MP3 final audio, left the Project and DID NOT SAVE it (thus no .cpr or .bak files there).
In this case the overall management was wrong from the beginning, from your (=user`s) side. Everything important is written in the manual (Project Handling chapter, not so long for easy understanding).

The normal concept of Cubase is to have a separate project folder for each project. It then should contain the Cubase project file (.cpr) and subdolders for audi, MIDI and some more.
mp3 will be created with the audio export functionality into a mixdown folder. Ths folder con be inside that cubase project folder or anywhere else wher you want. E.G when I produce an album I’m using a mixdown folder for all the tracks from different cubase projects that are part of the album.
If you have lost the cpr then you should try a recovery tool get it possibly back. If so you can create a new project folder, open the cpr and use the project backup function in cubase. This will collect all relating files into that cubase folder structure and you are gould to go.
Don’t try to leave this structure. It works and cubase creates backup files for the cpr in a time interval that you can define in the cubase settings
Pff. Found it. Not in Cubase but in laptop-files. Not that I didn’t look there before without results. Typed “projectname.bak” and finally all my versions appeared. Changed the latest version in “projectname.cpr”. A direction I accidentily remembered from a ‘help-video-tutorial’ in the thousand things I tried.
After that I could, back in Cubaseproject, use the “file/back up” option. Still have some difficulty finding the logic behind the “saving files procedure”. I want the “main projectfile back up” on my D drive and all my specific projects in a subfile from that main-file.
THX everybody (esp Nikkin) and sorry for being a bit frustrated. When you’re young you can remember different paths you took more easily. When you’re nearing eighty your mind is not that agile anymore.

I usually create a folder for (for example) band and then the subfolders - one for each song. This way there cannot be any mismatches because as soon as I open a template, I choose the correct (sub)folder thus all the consequent subfolders (Audio, Mixdown, Track Pictures etc.) are created in correct place and the first Save leads me there too. So I only enter the proper songname and that is all. In this case I can move the songs from my studio computer to my notebook (if I need to do some partly work when I am out or so) without the Backup Project function.
