I9-9900k is a much mature decision from the past that holds up very well considering the power consumption of the new chips .
I have a very hard time thinking that buying an old 9900K is a good buy in mid-2024. Both Intel and AMD should be offering much more compelling options I think.
How much is a 9900K today anyway?
I don’t know about the cost but considering that the new chips are so power hungry like having cpus stacked together and the recent bad rumors and with the next generation Qualcomm’s cpus just around the corner.
Ok, I just checked on Amazon and the cheapest one I see that’s boxed is about $400. That will lock you into a dead-end platform on an old CPU. I don’t know Intel prices for the upcoming platform, but from AMD you can get, all under 400;
A lowest tier 8-core at 290
12-core CPU at 360
8-core with v-cache for 375
All of those are current generation and there’s a new generation coming out in a couple of weeks. Same socket / platform. AMD has promised support for several more years which likely means at least one more generation after the one that’s just coming.
Just for reference.
I still don’t think that matters much. Cooling just needs to work. If chips are warm then get a better cooler. You pay for better cooling or you pay for cooler chips either with money or lower performance. It’s one thing if we’re stocking a data center with hundreds of CPUs, it’s a completely different matter if we’re just building a desktop.
I agree that it could be concerning. But Intel is coming out with new chips which hopefully won’t have a problem, we also don’t know if it’s a problem for DAW users, and there is also AMD.
Windows 11 on Qualcomm? A bit early to bet on that I think.
You are right but eventually all comes down in reference to what kind of music you work on and it’s needs and besides if you have hardware say an integra 7 you don’t need that much cpu power…
So be aware when on Mac computers throttling, do you know the name Tim Bergling (DJ) that lived and was inspired by Commodor 64 computer games?
So i checked quick… that is indeed not what you want, that after you got your system with an amount above the $6000, your digital environment is the world your instruments live, haha, and then your instrumenst (program’s) are the victoms?
So this words in the digital world was an attack?
I even can run Cubase SX for fun in Windows XP on a laptop from the year 2009, but just for fun, memory is full by 3 tracks with some effects.
But that was 2002.
So if you build a computer, and install windows yourself, in this case 10, but you have more then 6000 to spend, then windows 11 pro on a i9 processor with 32 GB RAM and a good sound card is the first step.
A good motherboard, and good hardware, does not have to cost $6000, so then you can look further.
Then you can buy all instruments.
And your are not reached your budget.
did you have a MIDI KEYBOARD?
Drum Pads?
What you can buy and how you do it depends on your self.
Good luck.
I’ve heard of Tim yes. Ironically people often say my music reminds them of computer games… although I’m not doing any of that old 8 bit SID Chip kind of stuff.
Another thing! I’m not sure why your comment was in replay to me.
It was not realy to you, but people always remember things when they hear music.
Just like when i make music, not the computer makes the music.
So people listen to music that you make with a computer, then it is as if they listen to the computer, but you are making music.
So, stay focus on your music, al digital ways to express and spread is another factor.
How more people talk about your music the better.
No matter what they are remebering, when they played a computer game themself.
People that never played a computer game are not so many anymore.
So people that can not remember computer music in the first place, should feel something else in your music.
Made with Cubase 13 pro.
Hi Blerg, i do not know if you had read this info ?
Good luck.
I listened to the music you linked. I think you could level up with more focus on the top end, hi frequencies. The sound was quite muffled, like something covering the tweeters. Quite creative and experimental overall.
Hey mitchie, i used the cut off button, to make the sound a bit different.
Trying to get a good vibe, i like low frequenty, but offcourse, i shall listen to the high frequenty’s, here it sounds via a PE very full…
Via my headphone, i hear a little less low frequenty, my 250 watt speakers, i can pump up the bass…
I was indeed try this out, i was not try to copy a concept in the sounds.
So many sounds in Halion… thanks for your advice.
Any reason why not a Windows 11?..
Maby it is cheaper to take your windows 10 license to another computer, it is just the way you want to build it i think.
Most computers that you can buy comes with Windows, but offcourse the hardware and how to build it if you want to use Cubase, then you can do that in Windows 10, but Microsoft do not give updates for Windows 10 anymore.
So Windows 10 is allready in the GEN3 digital world a platform for offline work, or testing in a virtual box, just like all the other versions anno 1985 Windows 1
Now try to install Cubase SX in Windows 11 and that don’t work anymore.
Why not Windows 11?
In many community’s was the fear allready a fact, in 2016 when Windows 10 came along, after Windows 7 and 8 the updates stopped and all product key holders from Win 7 and 8 got a free upgrade to Windows 10, after that many system crashed, and then you coul’d install Windows 10 clean, and work on.
So those upgrades are not always working fine, and many hardware was not ready for Windows 10, and many people had to buy new hardware.
The architecture of the processors is very advanced, and Windows 11 has the same issue for the people, many processors can not work with Windows 11, and then you have to buy another processor, or another computer.
So people that want to build a system, has no good reasons to use Windows 10, only the fact that it can work in this environment if the computer is configured at the way a DAW must use REALTIME AUDIO,
I am not gonna build a system with windows 10.
Nice, but for Cubase you do not have to overclock your processor in the UEFI.
Tweaking the computer
Modern systems with a fully updated Windows should not need any of the default settings to be modified. However, if certain drivers are not fully optimized and you experience audio drop-outs, it is worth having a closer look. Note that the following settings are often not accessible, especially on laptop systems.
This is important, because real time audio can not handle the speed boost process and the way the computer saving energy by sleep when idle.
- Disable Hyper-Threading (Intel)/Simultaneous Multi-Threading (AMD) in the UEFI BIOS if your CPU supports it and if your BIOS allows you to modify this setting.
- Disable advanced power-saving and dynamic performance options for your CPU if applicable. This usually needs to be done in the UEFI BIOS of your computer and includes ‘Enhanced Intel SpeedStep (EIST)’, ‘AMD Cool ‘n’ Quiet’, ‘Intel Turbo Boost’, and ‘AMD Turbo CORE’.
- Disable C-States in the UEFI BIOS if this is accessible. C-States allow your CPU to sleep when idle, which may interfere with real-time applications such as audio. This option is often called ‘Disable CPU Idle State for Power Saving’.
Offcourse for gamers and people that want to give an old computer a boost, overclocking is a thing they did for years.
I never said you had to overclock your processor for Cubase.
The post you are quoting is half a decade old and I was making a different point.
Because @Blerg started this thread 5 years ago and Windows 11 wasn’t existing, at the time.
4 months after, I purchased my still perfectly working Ryzen 7 3700X / Asus Prime X-470 Pro based system. But I still keep an eye on thread like this because, sooner or later, I’ll have to go for a Windows 11 system with an adapted CPU/Motherboard combo to go with it…
Who told you this?
Windows 10 Support ends in October 2025, until then it still gets updates.
End of support for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 | Microsoft Windows
Do you have limitations with this Computer?..
Yes indeed, you are rigth, but CPU Recommendations for a computer to build, i allready live in the fact that Windows 10 is old.
So, preparing for the future, i shoul’d concider Windows 10 as done allready, but you are rigth, Excuse for the wrong date.
Not that I could think of : it simply works, without hassles.
I’m thinking about a more or less future change for compatibility concerns : I’m not sure that Steinberg (and others) will keep for a long time the Windows 10 support, once deprecated by MS. Windows 7 is no longer supported by Steinberg since a while…
