Crackling during audio recording on low latency

Hi There
i am having major issues with recording thru steinberg onto lap top with cubase 12.
audio channel guitar and or vocal with buffer at 10ms is crackling and distorted. if i set buffer at 100ms it is clear but has the obvious latency.
i have tried changing settings thru studios set generic low latency driver settings.
frustrated need help
i have used an older version of cubes for many years so have some knowledge, upgraded to 12

What audio interface are you using. I would t expect good results if you are using a computers inbuilt audio with an asio driver
