Creating an educational exercise, need every system to have same horizontal spacing

Hi there, I’m creating a simple scale exercise for my students to go around the circle of 5ths and illustrate the addition of sharps for each pass. In this scenario, rhythms do not matter so I’ve hidden all time signatures and stems. All that matters is seeing the scale, then the next couple of bars will walk them through the process of raising the 4th scale degree, with the 3rd bar to illustrate what notes are now sharpened. After many struggles with staff text for precise placement and arrows I want to add, I decided I’m going to work out all the notation within Dorico and then export that into InDesign to do more advanced text layout stuff.

However for consistency, I’d really like every system (which represents a new key) to have the same exact horizontal spacing. You can see in the first one for C major, I manually adjusted all the horizontal spacings in Engrave mode (leaving sufficient room in that 3rd bar, but also for the text I wish to add there).

However the next system moves things around with the addition of new notes and key signature etc. I’d much prefer it to look exactly the same for every system. I futzed around in various layout options for justification but can’t really figure out how to force the same sizing regardless of how many notes are in a bar (basically want it to ignore that, and let me override the bar spacing manually - I’ll probably have to take key signatures into account for that first bar but at this stage I just want to see if it’s possible).

Thank you!

P.S. I’m still on Dorico 5.1.7. Haven’t had the need yet to upgrade to v6 but I’d be happy to if v6 has features that will make this task a lot easier.

With different players, maybe?

Thanks, that’s a pretty clever workaround! However, how can I remove the adjoined barlines at the front of each system and have unique key signatures for each player? When I attempt to change key it does them globally. This is as far as I could get it.

If you happen to still have your Dorico file saved (even if it’s V6 since I’m planning to upgrade eventually), I’d love to get a copy if you don’t mind. If not no worries. Thanks!

Insert a system break, select it, and in the properties panel, activate hide systemic barline

Close the K popover by typing Alt+Enter. It will make a local KS (only for the staff in which you enter it.)

Here you are

Amazing, thank you so much for your help and for even filling it out with more scales! Opened just fine on V5 actually. You also selected the perfect instrument since my class is actually for fellow cellists learning theory haha!

But also now I know how to do those things as well. Genius workaround! :ok_hand:
