Creating custom dynamics

For reasons that are beyond me the composer I engrave for has decided to change normal dynamics to something else:

Is there any way to make custom dynamics in Dorico to handle this? I know it is quite aberrant. Sigh.

You could change them in Library->Music Symbols I guess, or use Playing Techniques.

I like that you find it aberrant, not that your composer has decided to reinvent the wheel!

Slightly disappointed that mp and mf aren’t 1/2p and 1/2f.

I know that he who pays the piper calls the tune, but even if I agreed to do it (after lengthy argument), I’d continue to mention how pointless and confusing it is at every opportunity.

Has anyone ever performed this guy’s music?

p1 and f1 instead of just p and f would also be more consistent😂 Apparently mp does not exist for this composer… or perhaps that could be 1/2mf

I would strive for maximum confusion: mf should clearly be f0.

Yes comments about this aberration are all true, but the issue is can it be done. The thing I like about proper dynamics is that you can align them nicely with a command. Can that be done with playing techniques? And how would playing techniques line up nicely with hairpins? I am at the point of not agreeing to set this work.

Would it be a feature request to ask for the ability to create new dynamics., with the font and behavior dynamics have?

So why not do as I suggested and edit the music symbols?

@jesele’s method is the way to go. To elaborate a bit on that, in Library > Music Symbols, in the left hand panel choose the Dynamics category. Next, choose the dynamic you want to edit (e.g. pp). First thing you have to do is delete the existing pp glyph using the trash can icon in the bottom right.

Then, from the right hand panel, select your desired music font and from the Dynamics category, add the single p using the Add Glyph button.

After that you can add the numbers in a similar way, by choosing a category that has numbers in it. Depending on how you want them to look you can use e.g. Fingering or Tuplets. There are probably other categories that have number glyphs as well, I use this website to browse through the different categories. Finally, press OK and you can then add the dynamic by typing pp into the Dynamics popover.

Edit: just wanted to add that these changes will only affect that particular project as long as you don’t press the star button.
