Creating Multimeasure rests as in Finale

Unless you’re on a 14" laptop, there’s no reason why you can’t have a galley view score and page view part open at the same time. Look through the part for where you want a cue, then just add it to the score. The part will automatically update when you add it. Gif below:

Works even better on a dual monitor setup.

Ok thanks for pointing out the grid consideration.

Fred, thanks for pointing that out. To be honest in 30 years of Finale & Sibelius (20 years) I have almost never worked in galley view. But I see the value of using it for adding cues.

What is the process for opening a separate window for a part while the score is open in galley simultaneously?

Window > New Window. But you can also do this just with tabs in a single window (Window > New Tab), either side by side (Window > Vertical Split) or switching back and forth.

Perhaps that is because neither Finale, nor Sibelius had the benefit of a galley view?

Finale had “Scroll View”, which is functionally similar, being a continuous scrolling system, without pages.

And Sibelius called it Panorama View.

Sibelius calls it panorama and Finale it was command/opt e, I think, “scroll view”, yes benwiggy. It’s been around for years but I never warmed up to it, being a page view kind of guy.

Very good, thank you. I’ll try it out today.

Hi, I’ve been reading through this forum about creating multimeasure rests. I’m only trying to do this in the full score (which is a lead sheet) and I checked the settings in the layout menu as suggested. For some reason it isn’t working for me. I have 3 bars of rests which I would like to have as a multi bar rest. Not sure what I’m missing.

Do you remember what that was called in Finale 1.0?

You’ll need to supply the document, as otherwise, we’re just guessing what you might be missing.

Hi @tonester121
in case it could be helpful, here visual guide on how to handle Tabs and Split View (better on a big display  ) . Follow the numbers:

well, very interesting… I had created a workaround to get it back to my customer. So, in preparing a sample to show you, I deleted my workaround, deleted the bars of rest and inserted them again, and it worked. Thank you benwiggy for your response. I’m all set now.

Thanks Christian, for that visual. I tried the new window option and am loving that with a big monitor. I’m keep the score in galley view and the part in page view.

Circling back to the original question regarding creating multi bar rests directly, rather than leaving measures blank and having Dorico create them. I just bought and am playing with version 6, and haven’t seen any difference here. Is there any change here for that issue? I just want to make sure I’m not missing a new way of doing this. I use multi-bar rests as section repeats, as in an 8 bar rest that says “Chorus” above it, in order to create compact (typically 1 page) lead sheets for contemporary music. I would also be happy with being able to easily draw H bars if that’s another option! Let me know if there’s any better way to do this, and/or if this is planned for a future update!

There’s nothing to stop you putting some system text every 8 bars of rests:

I understand that. It’s more creating the rest itself. In finale, I could select a bunch of measures and right click “create multi measure rest” and it would change those bars into a multimeasure rest. I really appreciate the automatic creation of multi bar rests in scores from empty bars. However, I’d love some way to manually make them as well for applications like this.

Can you say a little more about your workflow?

If multibar rests are enabled for a layout, then Dorico makes them automatically; if you want to break an existing multibar rest, then there are ways of doing that (like adding system text, as @benwiggy has shown). So this may just be a question of changing how you think about things: Instead of starting with a string of rests and creating multibar rests out of them, you start with a multibar rest and break it up as needed.

I just added the System Text to the Full Score, and got the Part layout with the rests for free.
