Creating new instruments with old sounds

Hi, I’m new to Dorico 5 but used Elements quite a bit.
I have a requirement to create some new instruments based on the sound of a Bandoneon.
To do this I created a new instrument in the Instrument editor from Bandoneon, made some changes. e.g. reduced to one staff. I can use the new instrument successfully but it plays as a piano not a Bandoneon. Can anyone help please?

You would first need a VSTi that has Bandoneon sounds. Do you have one?

Yes it’s there in Halion Orchestra.

Could you post a picture of what the left panel of Play mode looks like?

Thanks for your interest.
To clarify, I created a new instrument “Concertina” from Bandoneon in the keyboard family.
I just found out that as a new user I can only embed 1 item of media per post. I’ll make two more posts.
Firstly my test score. Bandoneon plays as expected, Concertina plays as a piano.

Secondly the LHS of the Play screen

And thirdly a different view of the Play LHS.

Could you press the Track inspector button, so that we can see how that instrument is routed to HALion ? So that you can understand next in the VSTi where you need to make changes
Sorry, that’s your third picture, perfect. Press the round e next to HALion Sonic that you show in your second picture, that will open the VSTi editor. Check out which instrument is loaded on line 2. Probably a piano. Change it to Bandoneon.

Yes - it shows as piano.
Two problems - I am not clear how to change it and will its stay changed for future projects - I am trying to set up some templates.

Ok. What you’re trying to do here is create a playback template. It’s perfectly doable but I would not start there… However, there are very good videos that explain how this works, so if you’re really into it now I can try and find the links…
Basically, the concept is this: you can save Endpoints. This is a particular player (either a solo player or a section player) that is holding a particular instrument, and you give this instrument a certain VSTi. All those definitions are considered an Endpoint (there’s a button in Play mode left panel where you save that Endpoint, but that’s where a video is really helpful).
When you build up your playback template, there are automatic instruments (the main VSTi you’re using will be able to load any instrument left to be loaded, line by line) and manual instruments: those are to be set before the automatic ones, so that the ones you really want are loaded. Guess what? Those manual instruments are defined thanks to that Endpoint you’ve just saved.

Ah! I didn’t realise I was trying to create a playback template. I was just trying to create a templates for writing scores for different groups of concertinas.
Thanks very much - that’s very helpful. If you have any links easily available I would appreciate it.
Thanks again.

I think I’ve found the relevant stuff on Playback templates, so don’t waste your time trying to find stuff.
Thanks again for your help.

Of course, you might also have been creating a File template with a proper playback in it, you’re right! I did not think of it, but of course it makes totally sense if that’s a set of instruments you’re going to use repeatedly.
