Cresc. poco a poco in gradual style, without having a hyphenated "cre-scen-do"

Is this possible?

I think a cresc. at the start is much clearer than a cre-

Does anyone know a solution to this, or have found a work-around?

Thx for a great forum

Arne

I think you have three choices, if you want text instead of hairpins.

Did you have something different in mind?

Edit: Oh, I guess you might want cresc. - - - poco - - a - - poco. That’s not an option that Dorico allows. You could try putting just cresc. as a dynamic and then creating a line with the rest of the text. I’m wrong – @Zalde has the answer.

Hello @sandsang ,
Yes, you can, like this in the proprerties:

This is the right window Andre, but to distribute text evenly one needs to choose another gradual style called cre-scen-do, and I want that to be an unhyphened word, but the combination of the two is not an option I think

I see, maybe you want something like this?

You can if you check Abbreviate in the Properties

There was also a recent topic where @johnkprice did some experiments to influence the positions of the poco a poco, if you’re interested.

This is how I would like to do it (without the accent), but hyphens in between is ok

The abbreviate button did it, thank you guys,

remains only to get rid of the hyphenation.

Lovely

Here you go

Without the hyphens, there’s no indication that the text is all part of one phrase. You’d have:

To me as a performer, that would be confusing, especially over a longer passage.

I agree.

But keep in mind that the PDF spec says that a 0-width line should be drawn as “the thinnest line that the device can produce”. So if you make a PDF with a 0-width line and then print the PDF, you’re likely to see a thin line there.

Me too, but in this instance the passage is quite short. And as a copyist I must try to comply with the composer’s writing as much as I can. Thanx for making me know Dorico better. It really is a flexible notation software.

So hiding stuff in Dorico is not a good option?

It depends. If you’re always printing from Dorico to a printer, then a 0-width line should be fine. But if you’re exporting to PDF and printing later – or sending the PDFs to someone else to print – then you may get some unexpected hairlines. Note that this is not Dorico’s fault; it’s the way the PDF spec is written.

You are right. I would label this topic as a feature request for the team

Can you not just adjust the Engraving Options?
eg. These settings…

Give no hyphens…

Oh, interesting – a zero length line may be okay, as opposed to a zero width line.

The zero dash length trick works to get an invisible horizontal line with the line tool, if I recall correctly from posts on the forum, so this might just work as well!
