I am a new Dorico user and perhaps I am misunderstanding something with how the software treats tied notes, but this crescendo input doesn’t seem to be logically consistent. After researching, a guide explained that in order to input dynamics in the middle of a tied note, the carat must be utilized. This seems to work just fine when inputting dynamics like “p” or “mf,” and even “<f” and “>pp,” but does not work with cresecndi and decrescendi alone. Am I missing something or is this feature not working as intended?
Hi @NicWeaverMusic, after writing the desired hairpin into the popover, and pressing Enter, you need to press the space bar to give the hairpin a length (with increments of one quarter, as default. But you can change the value before pressing the space bar, from the panel or using the numbers, before you press the space bar once or repeatedly ):

After entering the gradual dynamic in the pop up and hitting return you still have to let Dorico know the duration over which the cresc. or decresc. will act. You do this by entering the desired duration (for example, “6” for a quarter note) and then pushing the space bar.
Or if you’re going to end with another dynamic, you can use the right-arrow to advance the caret. Whole process for p<f: Shift-N for note input, arrows to start point, Shift-D, p<, enter, move the caret with the arrows to the end point, Shift-D, F, Enter
