Cross staff playback

Hello,

when I type M or N to move notes in other staves, they still are played back as if they were in the original staff. Is there an option to have them play correctly? I’m on Dorico 5.

Thanks,

Daniele

Can you say a little more about what you’re trying to do? M and N are used for cross-staff notation in a single grand staff instrument (like piano), so I would expect the notes to have the same sounds.

It’s perfectly normal that cross-staff plays the same instrument: it’s supposed to be used in a grand-staff instrument. What exactly are you trying to achieve?

Cross-staff can actually be used regardless of the grand-staff, I think.

In my case it is useful for a single player playing multiple instruments: I’m using Vibraphone and Glockenspiel as a single line, with cross-staff. Is there any way to have the correct playback?

If the player is not supposed to play both instruments simultaneously, you’d better give the player both instruments, and let Dorico handle the changes. Playback will be automatic too.

That is what I am doing, but I need cross staves to have rhythm readability. It makes no sense to insert rests. Here’s a short snippet (vibraphone above, glockenspiel below).

Again – this is meant for a single player.

Then you may have to duplicate this onto hidden staves without the cross staff notation needed fro clarity and generate the separate sounds from the hidden notes.

Thanks Derrek. This is honestly too much work for every instance. I’ll just ignore the playback.

In any case, I believe this is essentially a bug: if a note crosses staves, it is only natural to play it with the instrument of the destination staff.

Except that joining the beam keeps the notes connected to the voice(s) in the lower staff. Logical, if frustrating.

With a multi timbral host with vibraphone on channel one and glock on channel two, you should be able to achieve this by enabling “independent voice “ for this player.

Yes, but then one cannot connect the stems as the OP desires.

I believe one could, assuming we are still using a grand staff, as the OP was doing.

I am not at the studio, and can’t confirm if different voices can cross beam… This might be what Derrek was referring to.
