Crossgrade from Cubase

I am on Cubase 12 Pro and since the update to Cubase 15 is already $199, I am considering taking the plunge and get Nuendo 14 for $349, in anticipation of the free update to 15.

Just want to know if I will lose any plugins or instruments if I do this crossgrade?

I believe you will lose use of VST2 instruments and plugins. It will also cost you double to upgrade every year compared to Cubase.

I believe he’s talking about cross grading to Nuendo version 14 with the grace period free update to 15. Will he have access to nuendo 12 in that case?

If you have for example Nuendo 15 your license will be work with every Nuendo version each was before 15 like 14,13,12. But not with Nuendo 11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. Because they use another dongle Elicenser system.

But if him have Cubase 11 on usb Dongle, It’s still can be using parallel.

Has that really changed? Isn’t it the same as in version 12, ie. one has to run the software in Rosetta mode in order to use VST2?

I have all use of my vst2 plugins on win11 Pro on my machines using any/all dongled Nuendos(10, 11, 12 etc) and full vst2 access on my “also” installed non-dongled Nuendo 14.

Same with my Cubases. 3-14. Dongled or not..full access to vst2. As well as vst & 32bit vst via jbridge.

When one buys a current nuendo version..full access to the versions before…back to your original buy ver.

I went native (MacOS-Apple Silicon) a few years ago, and haven’t been able to use VST2 since.

I was more talking about Nuendo maybe not having some of the bundled plugins that Cubase has? Like the virtual instruments maybe? On the comparison page it says Cubase has 11 whereas Nuendo only has 4?

Ha…dunno…..that rightside optional stuff area of the download assistant has soooo much optional stuff between my Cubase 14 & Nuendo 14, I don’t pay attention to what goes with what. In my case, I don’t use/download any of it anyway :slight_smile:

The amount of virtual instruments will be the same. The difference might be in the libraries that get shipped. Not sure why for Nuendo it should be less than for Cubase Pro.
Instruments are:

  • Retrologue
  • Padshop
  • Groove Agent SE 6
  • Halion Sonic 7
  • Sampler Track
  • Drum Machine

Don’t upgrade if you are thinking that Nuendo is like “Cubase Pro Pro” (yes, I wrote the word “Pro” twice).

Nuendo is NOT “Cubase Pro Pro,” but rather it is Cubase Pro PLUS extra features targeted toward post production for film, TV, game audio and immersive sound. So if you are doing those kinds of projects, then some (or all!) of the exclusive features may come in handy.

So just MAKE SURE you look carefully at the additional features to decide if they are worth it for you. Do you NEED them? HOW MANY of those extra features will you actually use? Will they make a real difference in your productions? Is the extra cost worth it to you? IF YES, then go for it!

And BTW, I’m not saying there aren’t features exclusive to Nuendo that can’t be used for music production and other kinds of projects too. Nuendo 14’s Adaptive Background Attenuation, for example, can definitely be used in all sorts of projects that Cubase users might want. And I love the Dialog Transcription feature too. Just those two features right there alone would make Nuendo worth it for me, personally (and there are many others!).

And who knows what other new goodies will be added to Nuendo 15.

As always, YMMV.

And nothing is really LOST from Cubase when you go to Nuendo. BUT! There are nuances to some of the differences, and some subtleties you’ll have to be careful of if you plan to do collaborating in back and forth cycles with someone who uses Cubase.

I switched to Nuendo with Nuendo 11 and never looked back. Do not miss Cubase at all.

Things I like in Nuendo over Cubase.

Double range tool, Range tool in Nuendo is A & B, Cubase gets the single only version.

You Preview automation in Nuendo, so you make accurate decisions, by bypassing it temporarily before committing. You can also save and Punch automation in Nuendo.
