Cubase 12 pro latency, delay & hangs

Hi, I am using a very high specification PC (I9) Extreme edition Processor with 18 GB RAM but still my Cubase 12 pro is not working properly i.e latency, delay & hang till I restart the software.
Kindly guide me how can I use the software smoothly without latency, delay & hanging.

I don’t think I’d describe a PC as “high specification” when you only have 18gb of ram.

If you want some help you’re going to need to give us more specific details as to what Cubase is (not) doing along with what interface you’re using etc etc.

HI, Sorry for late reply , the full details are I am using Audio Interface RME Fireface UCX, keyboard Roland FA6 with windows PC. Fa6 keyboard sounds I’m using then it’s ok in cubase, and the problem is that when I open vst’s in cubase then vst has issues sometimes it gets Cubase stuck and sometimes it has latency not every time jus sometimes, I think PC load very hi or anything I don’t know? Kindly tell me what internal settings I need for rme and cubase anyway I have no idea where the problem is.
Audio Interface (RME Fireface UCX)

All depends of what one is doing with it : for small projects and not so demanding sample based VSTis, it can be more than enough and I guess that there are countless laptop users working fine with a similar amount of RAM at disposal.

This said, I’m rather puzzled by the 18 number : for me, it should be either 16 or 32, but what do I know ?

Welcome, @MiG21

Any hint about what are the VSTi(s) that could be involved ? Does it happen also with Cubase bundled ones ? I ask this because I have the same audio/MIDI interface and my experience with it is completely hassle free, this, since several years, when latency or Cubase hangs are involved.

Optimize your PC for DAW. This video worked wonders for my set up. Also WiFi can cause a real problem with DAW on PC

Please do not follow these instructions blindly… he brings up that old “adjust best performance of: background services” nonsense, which is often repeated but doesn’t make it true. Nothing in Daw usage is a background service, its a regular program. It probably doesn’t hurt, as Cubase uses MMCSS threads for its audio engine and those are prioritized differently anyway, but just shows that this guy has no clue what he’s talking about and just repeats random stuff you can find on the internet anyway…
The best source on what to tweak, how to tweak and what not to tweak is still Pete Brown’s (psychlist1972 here on this forum) blog series (Unofficial Windows 10 Audio Workstation build and tweak guide - Part 1 - Windows MIDI and Music dev), he is our guy for audio and MIDI at Microsoft and knows his stuff…

Apart from that, it is not even clear that this will help, because the actual problem still hasn’t been described properly…

Sorry, let me be more constructive.

Since ver. 12 has been out for several years… did this problem just start? I can’t imagine you’ve been tolerating this problem for 2-3 years. Has anything changed in your system lately. Did it use to perform as expected? What VSTIs are you using when the computer hangs? What does the performance monitor show you?

If opening a VST in Cubase gets “Cubase stuck”, it is most likely a problem with the plugin, and you should a) update the plugin to the newest version and b) if that doesn’t help, maybe contact the plugin vendor.

If it “has latency”, and you mean that in the sense that you hit a note on your keyboard, but the sound appears too late to play properly, you should do the following:

  • check that the buffer size of your UCX is set to an acceptable level (i.e. 256 or less)
  • check that there are no other plugins loaded in Cubase that have a high latency (i.e. some “mastering” plugins like limiters…). See Channel Latency Overview .
  • use “constrain delay compensation” to temporarily disable high-latency plugins in Cubase durign recording: Constrain Delay Compensation

Thanks to everyone for the help actually all my equipment was packed up in storage and I was not doing any music for last 1 year I have just started it back up that’s why I am out of touch with a lot of things. I am not a pro at this it’s just a side hobby, I have just optimized my PC and updated Cubase and plugins, its improved slightly please see my Cubase and pc pictures attached and tell me what the right settings are I need in Cubase.
My pc specifications I have spent so much on making this high-end pc and it is still not working properly? What more do I need to do.

What plugins are usually running when these glitches happen? Your system and interface seem to be of high quality and should be capable. It’s got to be something else.

What you actually need to do is describe precisely what your problems are, when they occur, what you did before, what plugins you were using when it happens and so on.
I already gave some pointers what could affect latency, there were ideas from others, but unless we exactly know what the problem is, it is all guesswork and we simply cannot provide “the right settings” you are asking for (btw, there aren’t that many…)

Let’s say I have been working on Cubase for an hour then a msg flashes for a second on the VST which I don’t get a chance to read and then I get another msg (see attached pic) and all my settings get changed mid of my project and my work gets ruined.

I never experienced any ASIO sample rate unwanted changes with the UCX. Makes me think that there is a conflict somewhere, in your setup, so :

  • Is the actual sample rate (48kHz, from your screenshot) of your UCX correctly reported in the Windows sound card parameter ?
  • Is the sound chip (probably a Realtek one) still active ? If so, be sure that it is ONLY used fot the system sounds (Windows ones).
  • Any other audio hardware unit involved, such as an ADAT extension ?

I experienced the ASIO sample rate changed with my UCX, but it was always my doing, e.g. launching a second application that uses the ASIO driver but is configured to a different sample rate.

Something seems to be telling your RME audio interface to switch the sample rate to 32kHz - and that something likely isn’t Cubase (at least I wouldn’t know in what way it would do it).

I would recommend to also post this screenshot with the description of the issue and the screenshots of your setups to the RME forum - in order to increase the chances of finding out what is going on.

Hi I have sorted out most of my problem, my computer has been off for about a year or so and there were many updates I needed to get for my pc Cubase and all plugins, RME drivers and I had to slightly optimize my pc . Now I opened a new project and settings 44000khz and 32bit and it’s working ok. It should be working smoothly on 64bit and 48000khz but its not working properly on this setting anyway.

I would like some help on another matter I want to update Cubase 12 to 14.
previously when I updated Cubase 11 to 12 version instead of overwriting 11 to 12, both 11 and 12 versions are saved on my pc how can I updated so that it overwrites the old version. Because I don’t have that much space on my PC to store all new and old versions.

You don’t have to have the program installed to update. It just had to be licensed on your activation manager.
You can uninstall Cubase 12 before you install Cubase 14. I personally would do a full uninstallation. Clean house because Cubase 14 is more demanding than 12 with many new features and advancements.

With regard to leaving previous Cubase versions on your rig or deinstalling them first: It’s indeed a matter of personal choice as @Wickham_Sky pointed out.
Please keep in mind that your presets will be transferred from the latest version to your new Cubase version if you keep the old version. This way, you don’t have to save and transfer them manually in case you want to keep them. If it’s the latter, you should do a regular backup anyways.
Also, Cubase 12 only requires less than one GB of disk space - the big content chucks will be shared.
It’s up to you. Just make sure to check first if you need any personalized presets and settings before you delete the old version.

Enjoy C14!

I just checked my C drive in my PC (free space is 694gb) I have all Cubase 10,11&12 installed now please guide me if I uninstall these then will all my plugins and VST’s get disturbed/deleted? Plz see attached pic.
