Cubase 12 - sluggish performance, freezes, and interrupted recording

Hi folks. I’ve been running a large scoring template for the last several months, mostly without issues, but in the last few days it’s gotten pretty flaky. When recording I’m frequently having an issue where the audio will freeze, track meters will show whatever audio level they were at when it got stuck, and it’ll kick me out of record. After a few seconds, sometimes 5, sometimes 20, it’ll resume playback, with the cursor being however far ahead it would’ve been if it hadn’t frozen. This is happening when recording MIDI on instrument tracks and with audio recording, doesn’t seem to make a difference as to which instrument I’m using, and it’s probably happening on 25% of my attempted takes. I’m also getting constant beach balls in between recording, some of which will be autosaves. This will happen pretty constantly for a stretch of time, maybe half hour or so, and then without anything being done differently, run fine for a longer while after that.

Like I said, my template is large (1600 tracks), but with everything disabled except the tracks I’m using, I’m probably maxing out at 50-60 instrument tracks on a busy sequence. This doesn’t seem to be tied to the instruments though, it just happened when recording an 8th note MIDI shaker part with no other instruments playing.

First thing I tried was to increase the buffer, I generally have it at 512, but put it up to 1024. No difference. Then I got rid of a bunch of plugins and deleted a bunch of unused tracks, still no change.

I’m on a 2019 Mac Pro with a 16-core 3.2 GHz, 384 GB of RAM, and all SSDs, mostly M.2s, running Monterey 12.6.9. I’m using 2 UAD Apollo interfaces, with up to date software in them. I’m current on Kontakt 7 and Komplete Kontrol, both of which were updated in the last week, so that’s a possible culprit, I don’t think there’ve been any other noticeable updates since it was running smoothly.

Anyone have any idea on what might be causing this all of a sudden?

The last Kontakt update is giving people problems. If you’re able to roll back to the version before should fix the problem.

I got an NI support ticket and they sent me the previous version.

Brainworx too. (maybe related, NI owns them now) they have been totally useless.
