Cubase 13 - "Fixed number of slots" missed (Inspector and Channel tab)

Also missing the ability to see all available insert slots. I tend to place plugins multiple slots down for visual organization purposes. Or just leaving an open space before my plugin chain just incase I need to add an eq/gate/pitch plugin before the compression or whatever without having to move multiple channels of plugins down a slot one by one. Over the years, I’ve started doing a lot of mixing in the project window/inspector so it is certainly something that will effect my workflow. I’m sure I can adjust if I need to, but I am a little confused why it’s available in the mixer and not the inspector.

Hi,

You don’t have to do it one by one.

  • Have plug-ins A, B, C in slots 1-3.
  • Move the plug-in C over to the plug-in slot 1.
    => You get plug-ins C, A, B in slots 1-3.

This works in the Channel and the Inspector too.

This exact thing made me stay with Cubase 12, until they fix it. Even though I’ve upgraded to 13, but this slows down my production process. I usually put plugins on slots 4-5, knowing ahead that I’ll use some filtering on 2-3 or even dynamic compressors. I think they should give an option to have a fixed number of slots.

Now that I think about it, I’ve absolutely gone through moving a bunch of plugins around before remembering I could do this in the past. And I rearrange plugins via drag/drop in almost every mix. I am… dumb. I do like having the ability to place plugins anywhere in the list of inserts in the inspector so I don’t have to open the mixconsole to do that, but I also imagine I’ll be able to adjust to just using the edit channel settings or mixconsole to do that instead if I have to.

Having option to show all 16 inserts for us who dont use laptops is a must, workflow wise I make first 3-4 slots empty and I like to put my duck sidechain compressor at 14-15 insert so I have consistency throughout whole project. Understand that this is more compatible for smaller screens but at last put that as an additional option not as the only option.

These are all great workarounds but it’s kind of not being able to see the wood for the trees!

On anything bigger than an iPad, there is more than enough vertical space to have every item in the Channel visible, and there still be loads of blank screen space! So why hide anything?

If it’s to help your global nomad laptop users, then why keep the option in the mix console?

And if it’s simply to copy Logic Pro for new adopters, then you’ve also missed the point. Once you start adding plugins anywhere in Logics mixer, the number of slots in that LH panel always grows to match. So stick a meter in slot 10 of your master channel in your template, and the LH panel will always show 10 slots…

Hi all,

Generally, I prefer a static mixer (like a hardware one), where the layout is the same in every project, where I don’t waste time opening sections, scrolling the view with the mouse, or looking for thin bars to scroll sections. So when the mixer in Cubase (probably version 7) became flexible, extendable in every direction and depth… I have now reached my own settings:

INSERTS:
From top: PRE, 16 INSERTS, 8 SENDS, DIRECT OUT, FADER. I have more or less the same setting in Inspector Tab. I also like to load a plugin, e.g. Volume Shaper, into slot 15 or 16, because I know that it will not be affected by the signal level.

SENDS:
In each project I have my own set of effects: 1. short reverb, 2. medium reverb, 3. long reverb, 4. delay, 5. exciter, 6. doubler. When I want to add a delay, I don’t put it in the first free slot in SENDS, but in the 4th slot. I like order.

Sometimes my desk may be a mess, but my mixer MUST be clean and tidy while I’m working. Maybe it’s routine, maybe it’s boring, but I prefer it that way. And I still think that I don’t need as many as 16 slots for plugins, 8 slots would be enough. With a larger screen, I can fit up to 16. And on a laptop, I will have a small view. So let there be an option to MAKE all slots visible or NOT visible, just like in MixConsole.

Regards,
Paul

Only problem is you loose all audio and MIDI sidechains already established to the plugin you move! That’s why I always put the plugins with sidechain inputs LAST in the chain. Strange that this functionality is thrown out the window.
I also miss the FX chain presets tab :frowning:

+1 definitely need more visible slots and definitely need visible Pre/Post separator
also fx chain presets tab is needed
these are major workflow options!!
… compact view can be a option

It seems to me that sometimes Steinberg modifies Cubase to make it look like Logic (like this thing with the invisible insert slots), StudioOne, Live, etc. But Steinberg doesn’t understand that what they changed were useful features and that it’s other DAWs that should make changes to look (and work) like Cubase!

Inspector does not show the inserts on my cubase 13 also , i am sure there is a way to do this but have justed instored cubase 13 to my pc.It would be total madness is this does not show here , this is used hours a day to insert plugins any other place would be a time waster.

the only way after a 2 min look is to do this
open setup window layout top right .
click on channel
then new window opens next to inspector window .
drag channel window to make it wider
then click 4th from top right tab thing to remove Inspector

What a ball ■■■■ , but that is the work around . u can make the fader smaller as well.
Hope this helps and hope i find a way to have inserts back in the Inspector

Hi,

This is by design. The Inserts were moved to the Channel tab. If you don’t like it, right-click on the Inspector > Set up Sections… and enable the Inserts in the Inspector there.

if i click here

i got this

can it be solution ?

Yeah Just was about to post that
Right click in the bottom of inspector and there are settings

THANK GOD we found that .

Setting up a dummy plugin for now on slot 8 to keep our workflow going. Our programmer created an ‘Empty’ VST3 plugin for us.

Thanks!
But it’s more convenient (and for the sake of fast workflow) to have a customizable number of slots, isn’t it?

I don’t understand the need of developers to “fix” things that weren’t broken, breaking more stuff up in the process, while real bugs and half-implemented features stay unresolved.

A post was split to a new topic: My EQ on inspector doesn’t pic

I’ll answer this question as well:
I have my post fader line set at 2 or 3 before the last slot (so ~insert 14)

Generally I will have a clip/limiter on slot 13, the very last slot in the chain; leaving everything between 1 and 13 empty, and I fill as I go. This way I do not have to move plugins around - the limiter is always at the end of the chain and I can add plugins in between without having to re-arrange, saving time.

Occasionally I like to add a few post-fader effects - some sort of utility plugin and perhaps a gate.

Being able to see all of the insert slots allows me to quickly access the exact slot I want to use. This also helps keep things uniform in the mixer - slot 14 is typically my clip/limiter, etc., so if I decide to layer and group a track, I can just grab that exact slot and (re)move it without having to search for where my limiter is.

Yes I can usually do this with only 5-6 slots, but if the options are there, why not be able to see them all? I personally find it more annoying to not be able to see everything and constantly have to arrange things.

Can I right-click and send an insert to post, then move it up? Sure, but that’s extra work and I end up having to do it for every channel.

This should be an option: show/hide unused insert slots. I don’t see it as negatively affecting people who don’t want that option, so why not have it?

I think a better question to ask is “will this negatively affect anyone who doesn’t want this?”, don’t you think?

All in all, the mix channel on the side has been a huge improvement in general, so many thanks for the great new features in 13!
