Track monitoring appears not to be working as I am unable to monitor VST sounds when using midi keyboard input. There is no evidence of midi activity showing in the instrument track, however there is midi activity visible in lower screen and notes are being recorded and can be heard when played back. If I use a mouse and click on a VST virtual keyboard I can hear the VST sounds and there is instrument track activity. Is this a bug in Cubase 13 Pro? Anyone experiencing a similar issue?
Are you certain the correct MIDI input is selected for the instrument? A screenshot with the inspector pulled up might be helpful in determining if everything is in order.
Hi,
The Instrument Track’s meter don’t show incoming MIDI data. They show the Audio Return Channel meters.
How is your MIDI Input set up? Do you play in the correct range of the instrument?
Hi Martin,
Thanks for the quick response. In addition to Pro 13 I also have Pro 12 and I have no problem monitoring the incoming midi data in the form of sounds from the VST’s and the instrument track meter shows the activity fine. This has always been the case on previous versions of Cubase. How else can you listen to the sound of the VST’s when choosing which one to use? As to my midi setup, it is the same as I use on Pro 12. All in/out ports are active and I have the designated keyboard set as the source input.
regards
Hi,
In Cubase 13, is the Input also set to 3-Digital Keyboard 1, please?
These meters in the screenshot are the output Audio Return Channel meters.
I bet they have the option Auto monitoring While record enabled set in preferences in v12 but not in v13.
Hi,
Not really. There is the ‘All MIDI Inputs’ option. But this is not auto-monitoring neither. You have to select manually, which MIDI Ports are part of this virtual port (by default all of the are). But if you select any specific port, then just the one specific port is monitored.
Therefore again the same most important question: Which MIDI Input is selected, please?
Hi Martin,
Thank you for taking the time to look into the issue for me. Please see attached varios screenshots of how I have my setup. Can yu lease take a look and let me know your thoughts.
Thanks
Hi,
Thank you for the screenshots.
Could you also attach a screenshot of the HALion 7 window, please? Do you have any patch loaded? The channel is set to Any, so it takes the channel, you sent from your hardware.
Hi,
Halion screenshot attached as requested. If I use the mouse to play the onscreen Halion VST keyboard I hear the sound and there is track activity, if I use my attached midi keyboard still nothing? I have tried various combinations of input channels etc to no avail. As I previously mentioned, Pro 12 works perfectly well in a similar scenario and I can hear the VST sounds when either the record or monitor button is selected in the instrument track.
If I create a midi track in Pro 13 I can record without any issues so I know the keyboard is communicating fine, it’s just that I cannot get the monitoring to work for the instrument tracks?
Hi,
Below HALion 7 01 try to change the Any to MIDI Channel 1, please.
When you play the keyboard, do you see the MIDI Input LED in HALion? You should see the MIDI icon blinking yellow, if I’m not mistaken.
Hi,
No Midi input LED on Halion when I use my keyboard. However, if I use the mouse then I get the green LED flashing and shows it is on port A1. All sounds can be heard fine
Keyboard was set to send on channel 2, however, I changed to Channel 1 and set Halion to channel 1 also, still no result. I checked the output midi channel with midi-ox so can confirm the sending data is fine.
With both channel and VST set to ‘Any’ in the track inspector I would have expected it to work regardless of the transmitting channel of the midi keyboard?
Hi,
Could you attach a screenshot, where did you set the Channel in Cubase, please?
Can you add MIDI Insert MIDI Monitor, okay some Notes and attach a screenshot from the MIDI Monitor, please?
Hi Martin,
I decided to install Pro 13 on a different computer and everything worked as it should? I then matched the same settings on my original computer and the problem persists. I checked the Midi Insert Monitor and there is NO data being received, which is very odd? I have even uninstalled/reinstalled both the Steinberg USB driver and Cubase, same result. I have tried different USB cables/USB sockets, different midi keyboards, and reset Cubase preferences, still cannot get it working. I raised a support request with Steinberg so let’s see if they can offer any suggestions.
Thanks very much for all your assistance, much appreciated.
Hi,
Could you try in the Cubase Safe Start Mode [Disable preferences], please?
Or even to rename/remove Cubase preferences folder to get the factory settings? Cubase Preferences folders are:
Mac: ~/Library/Preferences/Cubase X
Win: %appData% \Steinberg\Cubase X_64
Where the X is the Cubase version (for example 13).
Hi,
I previously tried the Safe Start Mode and it didn’t work, however completely removing the preference folder as you suggested has done the trick, all is working fine now !!!
Martin, I can’t thank you enough for sticking with this for me and finally getting it to work. I was literally about to remove ALL Steinberg software and try a fresh install when I saw your latest suggestions, phew!! thank goodness I didn’t.
Regards
Mike
