Cubase 14 audio dropout

I tried disabeling multiprocessing and somehow it worked. I have no idea how this could decrease performance in anyway but it seems that way at least. I have been doing some tests and I can now record with a buffer size of 192 without dropouts or stuttering, but I’m going to keep testing just to make sure it actually fixed the issue.

Disabling ‘Multi Processing’ is mentioned as something to test in this Steinberg Cubase / Windows optimization guide. But it doesn’t explain why it could be causing issues. Anyway, you can take a look through the guide for some more ideas if your issue persists.
Please keep testing and come back and confirm whether this was the solution or not.

Tweaking Cubase/Nuendo

In the Studio ▸ Studio Setup ▸ VST Audio System ▸ Advanced Options, there are some settings you can experiment with.

  • ‘Processing precision’
A processing precision of 64-bit float can increase CPU load and memory consumption.
  • ‘Activate Multi Processing’
Usually, having this selected is the preferred setting. But if performance issues arise, it is worth deactivating the multiprocessing support for a test.
  • ‘Activate ASIO-Guard’
As mentioned earlier, Cubase/Nuendo makes heavy use of real-time processing.
The ASIO-Guard allows you to shift as much processing as possible from the ASIO real-time path to the ASIO-Guard processing path. This results in a more stable system.
However, depending on the system, the project and the plug-ins used, it is worth a try deactivating it or selecting a different level.

First of all I’m so glad you figured it out and I hope your testing continues to confirm that things are stable. Once I considered myself pretty tech savvy but so many things happen now that are total head scratchers and if I’m lucky enough to find a solution I mostly don’t understand the why. My beefy Dell Inspiron just wouldn’t handle the simplest real time audio. I was a power management module that was hogging core 0 on the machine. This great app Process Lasso allowed me to tell Cubase to not use core 0 and now things are fine. Took so long to get that solved.

What’s maddening is that it brings all the music-making to a screeching halt. You can get back to the fun stuff now!
