Cubase 14 GUI design regressions

I misremembered the year, it was my mistake.
Although this screenshot is from my Cubase 13 pro, I specifically noted that the meter in Cubase 14 pro trial still doesn’t support high resolution, if I remember correctly. Moreover, even if the interface is from Cubase 13, a 2023 software, is it acceptable for the interface elements to still be low resolution?

Cubase is very powerful, but IMO its GUI is starting to look a bit outdated compared to some other DAWs.

Outdated compared to what?

That’s a highly subjective debate there, to me Cubase looks just as ‘modern’ as anything else. Do we go back to the awful ‘Aero’ style gui that came out with SX? Do we need more flashy graphics or blinky lights or something??

Some of these same people would be back to complain that their 10-year-old iGPU can’t render the UI at 60 FPS in 4K. Because “It’s 2025. What DAW can’t render 4K in 60 FPS by now, AMIRITE?!”

Steinberg will never win.

Regurgitated talking points like “… its GUI is starting to look a bit outdated compared to some DAWs” read like something copied and pasted from Reddit.

“Some DAWs” can be 3 out of 30, though the underlying insinuation [intentionally] hints otherwise.

Either give some decent feedback or keep those nondescript faux critiques out of the discussion. You don’t have to write all of that to ask them to put in some high resolution meters.

It seems to be mostly readability-related.

i agree with most commenters here on the new cubase gui. Im actually still on cubase 9.5 and hesitant to upgrade as that is the last gui i really like. Steinberg if your listening, please add more customizations so people can change themes to their liking and revert to looks of earlier cubase versions..

I agree, what a disaster…Good lord! Why change the iconic look for something much worse! Abort!

Yay two more completely useless ‘Change the GUI’ comments with absolutely no suggestions on WHAT needs to be changed or why..

And simply saying ‘I liked it’ or ‘it’s iconic’ doesn’t cut it. God help the developers if you’re ever picked for beta testing and counted on to deliver useful, informative knowledge heh.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but if they haven’t already done so after I don’t know how many comments… I’m already in the “let them do what they want” mode.
When it becomes more uncomfortable for me to work with Cubase, I’ll look for an alternative out of necessity. Right now, I can’t afford to spend time learning how to use another DAW, so, Steiny, do what you want!

I feel the same say. I’m adjusting to C14. I have a new MacBook Pro M4 MAX and the display is wonderful but fonts are so tiny and difficult to read. I like a more muted colors and the high intensity SOLO button is too much. And lately, it seems so far between releases. I would gladly pay maintenance fee to get more frequent releases.

If you had to pay, the disappointment and anger would be even greater. Or does this mean that since maintenance updates are free, they “sell” you every three months? Pro Tools is paid, but at least its interface has been practically the same for years, Logic is the same (since it was revamped), even Reaper…

Speaking of Reaper, they release free updates almost every 15 days, correcting a good number of bugs. Its license costs $60-$120 (if you want it, you have to), and it must be a fairly small team… Steinberg has been in the business for YEARS and is one of the LEADERS! Why don’t they try to get closer?

I pay for Pro Tools too and they are slow to fix things too. You get some “free” plugins with their maintenance plan but I mostly use UA stuff. It is frustrating because as users we rely on them to put out the maintenance releases. I stay current even if I don’t always use the latest version. I just wish Steinberg would give us more control over the size of fonts and the colors. I like how in Pro Tools you can save your own color mappings separate from the preferences, but I think their fonts are too small in some cases as well.

Yep, it’s not necessarily better in other DAWS, I’ve recently fired up Reaper again for some test, and the default user interface is way worse than Cubase’s, there seems to be no professional UI/UX designer at work whatsoever.
And Cubase I think still stands alone in that it has a fully scalable mixer, vertically and horizontally. Except, sadly, for the font size…

I totally agree! The new interface is called ‘poke your eye out’ or ‘hello, cataracts!’ :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:. Everything in the new mixer has merged into a solid mess.:sob: I can’t see where the sends are, where the inserts are, routing… At the same time, there are some features that I’ve been waiting for! The “‘beat calculator”’ is missing. Why?:weary_cat:
Drag n Drop settings are missing altogether. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:
I’m looking forward to it being fixed.:woman_cook:

I felt the same way about Reaper. Between Pro Tools and Cubase, I feel I can be creative. I’ve tried the make the Key Commands between the two as close as possible. That cuts down on the frustration. I just spent plenty of hours customizing C14. There is still stuff I prefer in C12, but C14 is very usable.

I am really not that picky when it comes to the GUI.
Having said this, the one thing that bothers me most apart from readability are undetectable borders of plugins which just melt into the black of the background. At least 10 times a day I still grab the wrong spot whenever I want to drag a plugin window. No real learning curve, maybe I’m just too clumsy… I don’t envy fellow users who work on a laptop or tiny screens.

I feel the same say. Decided to stay on C12 indefinitely. I’m really curious as to why they decided to go this new direction but all I can say is that it is a downgrade in every level. Honestly, it boggles my mind..

Same here, still on C12. I paid for C14 months ago and have been checking the forum weekly to see if UI things have been addressed given the readability issues a majority seem to agree on. I give up, no more weekly checking.

As a past software developer/manager myself it’s pretty clear they need a large community of serious users to vet any major UI changes they are considering, before coding starts.

There are thousands of users registered on this forum and thousands more who don’t participate at all.
110 users have posted on this thread so far and not even all of them are complaining about the GUI or its legibility, so let’s not get too carried away.

LOL Nobody’s getting carried away. I’ll check back every month to see how it’s going with C14 updates. Back to music…
