Cubase 14 & most recent update has a visual bug with displaying VST3 plugins on the inserts

Cubase 14 & most recent update (14.0.40) has a visual bug with displaying VST3 plugins on the inserts. To the right of the plugin list when you go to view and load a VST3 plugin it should display 3 dashed lines /// to signify that it’s a VST3 plugin but it only “barely” shows one line. “No” it is not a VST2 plugin these are definitely the display for all or any VST3 plugins and there seems to be a bug in the display. Even if you drag the Inspector windows as far as it will go to the right it still doesn’t show all 3 lines when expanded.

Indeed, a dodgy scroll bar:

I wonder if it’s because it’s now presumed that all plugins are VST3.

It could be, but then it should just not show anything but regardless it still allows you the option in the plugin manager to allow for vst2 plugins at the same time (assuming the plugin vendor codes it in a way that both will show) or even if you have a plugin that is only vst2, so yes thankfully Cubase 14 still allows it (vst2). If it’s going to allow both then it should still need to display those 3 dashes correctly to identify easily. I also don’t like at all thsi idea of phasing out VST2 all together. If I want to go back and work on an older project that used specifically a VST2 plugin for which I had saved my own parameters and presets then that older project will ask to call up that Vst2 plugin or ELSE it will not load any plugin version for that project that you relied on being saved. Also most presets you make yourself and save with a vst2 plugin are NOT compatible and won’t work with a vst3 plugin so trying to replace the vst2 plugin in the old project with VST3 and reloading the preset from older project won’t work. It’s just not good at all if you ever want to rework old projects.

Exactly, I’m assuming the top picture is a previous version 13 or earlier and the 2nd picture is Cubase 14. Exactly, same issue, it’s not a HUGE issue I guess but it’s certainly a bug and is certainly annoying.

No, both are from 14.0.40. The first image shows the dialog without the scroll bar. When enough folders are expanded, the scroll bar appears, and then the stripes are hidden under that scroll bar. It’s a small bug. When the vertical scroll bar appears, a horizontal one should appear at the bottom, but it doesn’t.

Nothing to do with VST2 or 3.

Do both of you still have VST 2 plugins enabled in the Plugin-in Manager? I have them disabled now, and I don’t see the /// at all.

Same here, and I don’t have VST2 enabled.
Enable VST2 and the bars show up, and they’re partially hidden by the scroll bar as described above.

If VST2 is disabled then there is no need for visual clues as to which is VST2 or VST3. So that makes sense.

I have some VST2 for older projects - EastWest Play and a couple of others. I have VST3 versions installed for newer projects.

I still think it’s just the scroll bar obscuring the stripes when the dialogue contents extends down too far. A close look at my screenshots clearly shows this behaviour.

@KT66 You sneaked an edit in while I was typing!

I know!
And agree, it’s a scroll bar thing.

Bug or not it’s not really a biggy.

I suspect Cubase 15 is a month or two away and I bet VST 2’s are not part of the new version. Just a guess.

Off now to open Cubase and see if I can see /// in the insert slot.

The scroll bar overlaying something from the dialog is not limited to the plugin selection dialog. This also happens in other dialogs like Drum Maps editor (if I recall correctly, I found two or three occurrences but forgot already where).

Also, I think this issue was not introduced with 14.0.40 but was already present before, was it not?

I recall there were some observations about it in V13 as well.

Yes, I have vst2 enabled, precisely why I “want” to be able to easily see those /// dashes to indicate it is a VST3, just like it always had in the past. Not every plugin company allows thh3e showing of both vst2 and vst3 at the same time (depends on their coding) IF you have both installed but for the ones that do I would like to have a clear indicator of what the VST3’s are.

Yes and there is also a bug in the control room panel in it’s insert section. You should see at least 4-5 blank insert slots when viewing it but you can only see two and the next available only shows up each time you add a plugin. Add one in the one empty slot and just one more blank one appears beneath, so on and so on rather then showing like 4-5 from the start.

I don’t see it in v13

I hope that is not true, but I’ll have to keep my eye out for that. And if that’s true I won’t be able to buy it anytime soon. I still rely on VST2 being available (although I try and no longer use them in new projects) because I go back and work on older projects rather often that rely on them for certain plugin recalls and presets etc. Things should always, when possible, remain backwards compatible for as long as possible especially as it concerns recording software. Obviously people will want the option to go back and rework old projects. If you’ve saved an old project that wants to recall a certain Vst2 plugin Cubase won’t simply open up the Vst3 version in it’s place and use it as a replacement with the settings you had it saved with for your song etc. It demands that it be the original vst2 or you lose the presets and even perhaps the plugin from it’s slot. especially important when working with soft synths etc. I suppose there is the option of just opening up the older projects in an older version of Cubase, 13 or what have you. Thankfully they allow the older versions of Cubase to remain functional.

Yes but that’s the bug, the scroll bar SHOULD NOT be obscuring them regardless. You cant fix it by exapanding the size of the inspector window either.

I was agreeing with you, not disputing what you said.

This has nothing to do with the scroll bar of pop up dialogs. Furtheremore this is a desired feature not a bug. You should be able to switch off this behaviour by right clicking the section header and clicking the appropriate menu item.
