according the manual you could use retrospective recording in stop and play mode. It works in stop mode, but it don´t in play mode.
it should be very use full in play mode. what can be wrong*?

Does no midi region show up at all, or does it show up empty?
Retrospective record has been buggy for me forever…so if it’s the bugged issue, you’ll see a midi region but no data / data thats displaced from where it should be.
I’ve found that resetting the retrospective buffer (not at Cubase for proper naming) after launching the Program gets rid of a lot of weirdness.
Can you be clearer about this? If this solves my issues with it I’d be so grateful.
