I created a project with the demo version of Cubase 15 Pro and I don’t understand why it doesn’t sound the same when I play it back in Cubase 14 Pro. There are significant volume differences on some audio tracks, making it practically unusable.
I haven’t used any of the new features in Cubase 15 in my project, so Cubase 14 should play it correctly, right?
I don’t think this is fair because it forces me to upgrade to Cubase 15 in the next few days, even though I was planning to wait for a future promotion.
Hi,
not all differences between two versions manifest themselves in obvious feature differences. Upward compatabilty is easier to achieve.
Why don’t you render the problematic tracks and reimport them into Cubase 14? What kind of tracks show this kind of erratic behaviour in the first place? I am sure there are many ways to fix it - no need to buy C15 now if you’d rather wait
Oh, but there’s absolutely no way I’m going to buy Cubase 15 under duress!
I could try the render function, but I don’t think it will change the volume difference since the settings on the affected tracks are strictly identical between Cubase 15 and 14.
I could look at the problems on a case-by-case basis, but again, I’m mostly disappointed with Steinberg; it’s a form of forced selling (even though I won’t give in). This will mainly serve as a lesson: never start serious work on a trial version.
Maybe try and get to the bottom of what is happening different in the output of 15 to 14.
Is it a difference on the master volume or individual tracks. Is it maybe being caused by an effect that isn’t available on 14.
Have you checked what is actually happening different.
I’m sure it isn’t some Steinberg conspiracy to force you into buying an upgrade.
What @Mrhehon said.
Steinberg is not pushing you into buying anything. If you start any sort of project in a new software version you can’t just expect it to work flawlessly in a previous version, too. That’s just the way it is. I can’t see any sort of wrongdoing here by Steinberg.
Again, as @Mrhehon and I already suggested: identify problematic tracks and if you need help share. There surely is an easy way out without buying C15 if you don’t want to.
How else would you solve it if not a case-by-case basis? From what you’re describing, I can nearly guarantee that you’ve got something set up differently between the two - you’ve not mentioned Control Room at all, which has turned up to be the source of different monitoring characteristics on more occasions than I can count. You very well could have VST2 enabled in C14, but not in C15, and thus have any number of plugins marked as “missing” in C15 and being bypassed.
You’ve most certainly overlooked or changed something between the two, and the lack of information coupled with how quickly you’re claiming SB is trying to “force you” to update or otherwise lay blame seems premature and - frankly - misplaced.
Just take a bit of time and learn what you’re doing and test. You’ll undoubtedly find it.
Just to say it, if you’re just now realizing this after “staring serious work on a trial,” then it also rather well frames the overall context here. Not trying to throw shade, just pointing out that it seems like you’ve got some due diligence to engage in on your side yet.
I didn’t use the control room on the project I’m talking about.
As I said, none of the new features introduced by Cubase 15 were used in the project.
The third-party plugins I used work just as well in Cubase 14 as in Cubase 15.
I don’t get any error messages when opening the project in either version.
The settings (audio inputs and outputs) are identical. I’m quite familiar with Cubase, so I’m surprised by this volume difference on one particular vocal track. And yes, the settings are exactly the same on all tracks since it’s the same project and therefore the same *.cpr file. All the plugins are present, nothing is missing, and yet two audio tracks (vocals) are much louder in Cubase 14 than in Cubase 15. That’s just a fact. I’m not coming back until next week and my trial version of Cubase 15 will have expired, so yes, it bothers me because I won’t be able to compare the settings I had.
