Cubase 14 - surprised by feedback

Hi, these days I find multiple threads here where people utter their disappointment about “Modulators do not work with external instruments”.
Honestly speaking I am surprised - because the modulators are very obviously not a midi-thing, but address cubase internal parameters. So it is indeed not a surprise to me that it does not work directly with external instruments.
I assume that as soon as a device panel exists or is created, you can control the parameters on the panel with the modulators - that is, because the device panels implement the connection between cubase parameters and midi.
I DO understand the surprise in cases where vsti’s that come together with an external device cannot be modulated.

Can someone explain why there was any expectation that the modulators are working as “midi-modulators” and thus able to control external gear directly? - I mean, not a single announcement that I see fed this expectation!
Thx, Ernst

Probably to a lot of people writing MIDI parts for VST instruments or external gear equates to a similar workflow.
But indeed Modulators connect to VSTis not through the old MIDI tech and therefore don’t apply to external gear.
So if you remove modulators there isn’t that much new in C14 (let’s be honest nobody needs a new reverb or delay plugin).
I wish there had been more ironing of previously raised issues and hope we can lobby for a strong C14 update.

There’s nothing obvious about it.

The modulators are available when you have hardware configured as an “External Instrument “ in Cubase. It offers you MIDI channel > MIDI cc. However when you select this it gives an “unknown error”
If you try the same thing with a VSTi such as Retrologue to assign the modulator to. MIDI cc you get the same error.

If the modulators were not meant to modulate MIDI cc then why is the option there?

To me the critical point is that modulators don’t even work with VSTs controlling external synths completely, like my Soundtower PlugSe for Prophet 6 or Voyager. You can set them up without getting an error, but they do nothing.

I have never expected modulators to work with via the simple external instrumets setu, but I’m surprised even VST controllers don’t work.
