Cubase 14 Unstable Since Last SDA Update

As per Title.
Cubase 14 has been rock solid, for me. That is, until the last SDA update. Now it crashes maybe 75% of the time on opening. Sometimes I get as far as the Hub opening, sometimes as far as the Set Up (for new empty projects), I get as far as adding an instrument, and then - Cubase, him gone!
The crash log is always the same:

…Just the name of the log file differs.
If I get as far as opening a project, Cubase, him just fine.
Anyone else getting this, recently?

i9 12900/AMD 7900 XTX/64 Gbytes RAM/SSD OS drive
Win 10
Cubase 14.0.20
SDA &tc version:

Cubase 14.0.20 64bit2025.5.2 20.56.58.590.dmp (1.2 MB)

No, I can’t confirm this behaviour here on both rigs (Win 10/11, latest SDA).
Are you sure it has something to do with with the SDA? I haven’t looked into the dmp, yet.

Maybe Steinberg provided a special SDA version just for you since you have always been such a massive fan of the SDA

Hi,

Do you have the latest MediBay (Mediaclient) version installed, please?

You cheeky boy!
S’true, though!

EDIT
I do open the SDA now and again, because, I believe, it automatically updates all the other utilities.

I have no idea. According to the screenshot above it’s v1.2.40.50.
I try to keep everything up to date.
As I said, it only started after the last update, a couple of weeks ago.
Another edit:
I should make plain that this happens when opening Cubase, and often before I get the chance to open a project. It also happens when I create an empty project (I often do that to check bugs others have reported, and so on.)

Here’s another dump.
Cubase 14.0.20 64bit2025.5.3 0.05.36.392.dmp (1.2 MB)

And another, just a few seconds later:
Cubase 14.0.20 64bit2025.5.3 0.07.03.369.dmp (1.1 MB)

I should have answered this - the problem has only happened since the last time the SDA was updated. The “Safe Mode” screenshot I posted says the error was, (and always is) in the mediaservice.dll. The SDA updates the MediaBay, so I think not so much the SDA itself, just the MediaBay update. If that makes sense.

Hi,

Reported to Stienberg. Thank you.

Googly,

it could be that you’re having an older version of the mediaservice.dll in your Cubase directory.
Can you de- and then re-install Cubase 14.0.20?

Hi,

Yes, the crash is in the mediaservice. The current version is 3.1.0.3, but the crash logs show that mediaservice.dll 2.7.7.211 is in use.

On the other hand, if I’m not mistaken, this component suppose to update automatically any time you start the Steinberg Download Assistant (if you don’t cancel it).

To update the mediaservice component:

  • Quit all Stienberg applications.
  • Start Steinberg Download Assistant.
  • Let it download the latest components.

Hi, @Johnny_Moneto and @Martin.Jirsak
I downloaded the Cubase installer and had a peak into the .MSI file and it shows the same mediaserver.dll as already installed.
However…
I’ll do things proper:

  1. Uninstall Cubase and the SDA. Reboot.
  2. Download and install the SDA. Reboot.
  3. Use the SDA to install Cubase. Reboot.
  4. Spend a day testing.

Thanks for you help, hopefully I’ll get back here tomorrow with good news.

Hi,

You don’t have to uninstall Cubase.

The mediaservice component is independent.

The crashes happen in the .dll with version 2.7.7.211. But you should have a 3.1.x in your Cubase Components folder.
If you have 3.1.x then Cubase uses the wrong .dll for some unknown reason.

Hi,

To check the version, which is used by Cubase, go to Studio > More options > System Component Information > Program Plug-ins. Find Media Service in the list and inspect the Version column.

Ooops! Too late!
The media bay seems to be the correct version, now. I’ll test it and come back tomorrow.
Thanks again, guys! May the Fourth be with you!! :+1:

Well, all seems back to normal stability. No crashes after repeatedly opening Cubase (it was crashing on opening the majority of the time).
Also, there was an anomaly in the MediaBay window (when I managed to get Cubase to open) where, if the “Include Sub-Folders” button on the MediaBay toolbar was selected, the details panel would just show some kind of “loading, please wait”-style animated icon. That’s been fixed, also.
So all good.
Many thanks!

Good to hear!
@Johnny_Moneto probably had the right hunch that it was caused by an outdated version of the mediaservice.dll causing conflicts with your updated system. Under this presumption the question remains: why didn’t the SDA automatically update this dll like @Martin.Jirsak described? Denied access? Have you changed any security settings?

I don’t touch the security settings. I set them up when I install Windows and after that just check that an update hasn’t reset them.

As to this, who can say. I even re-installed the individual components.
Anyways, it’s back to normal, and working as before.
And this will make you smile: The SDA actually downloaded and installed Cubase without a hitch. :scream:
So that’s another plus.

LOL  You and the SDA are besties now! Who’s to say there are no more miracles anymore in this world :dizzy:
