Cubase 15 is no longer working properly

In the first few days after the upgrade I had no problems, but for the past two days Cubase 15 has been stumbling along. The project cursor only runs with interruptions, and Cubase accepts commands only with long delays. I am using a Windows 11 PC. The Audio Performance Meter shows a load of about 20%.

Here’s what I have already tried:

  • Increased buffer size to 1024 (RME Fireface 802 FS)

  • Tested all settings of the ASIO Guard

  • Constrain Delay Compensation

  • Removed the second monitor

  • Switched to the internal GPU and disabled the external GPU

  • Disabled SSL 360 in the Task Manager

What else can I try to make Cubase usable again?

Thank you i advance for helping me out.
Peter

Hi, @PeterZ

Difficult to give accurate advices from here. Few questions, though :

  • How does the audio stream behave (eventual dropouts, crackles, etc.), beside the UI interruptions ?
  • Any recent updates installed on your setup (including a Windows one) ?
  • Any recent changes done, either in Cubase audio setup configuration or in your audio device control panel ?
  • What does the Windows Task Manager > Performance panel shows ?
  • Any related issues with other applications ?

Most of the things in your list will not really help. This sounds like an unrelated issue.

Have you tried running LatencyMon? It may help to point you in the right direction.

@ cubic13,

thank you so much for talking time and your reply.

The audio stream is ok, no dropouts and crackles.

Recent installs and updates are: SSL uc1, SSL 360, FF Limiter and a Brainworx Amek channelstrip. But all of those worked fine for while before the problems started. I also deinstalled the Geforce 2080 and switched to the internal GPU, with 2 and also only 1 screen.

The Task Manager shows a capacity utilization of 15% or so for CPU, grafics, Memory etc..

@ Phil Pendlebury,

also thanks to you. No, I didn’t try LatencyMon. I will look into it. Thanks for the tip!

could you try to run cubase with disabled or deleted preferences? And can this behavior already be seen with an empty project?

shouldn’t be absolutely neccessary anymore nowadays, but as it can impact performance, make sure that you exclude the Cubase process (and also your project/sample folders) from Windows Antivirus realtime scan.

Before anything else. Run Latency Mon and post results. Please.

@ Phil: I downloaded LatenyMon. I’n not sure if inserting the screen shot here, I try anyway. It says, my system is suitable for real time audio. But Cubase stutters and doesn’t react to commands anymore while LatencyMon is running.

@ DSabath: I started Cubase with disabled preferences and it got better. I also took out a few Sonible plugins and Cubase worked as good as ever. Inserting them back didn’t cause any harm. It’s the first time I had to start Cubase with disabled preferences. Will I miss anything now or in future?

@ fese: My Cubase and the project folders are excluded from Antivirus.

Oh again! After everything looked to be ok, Cubase went crazy again.

Hi again,

Could you give us a detailed view of the specs of your system, including the audio interface ?

Beside this, I would emphasize the suggestion of @DSabath : how things go with a near empty project…

  • first, with just an audio track including, say, a two minutes long audio event (i.e., a simple mic recorded hand claps sequence),
  • then, the same track but with different added effects, bundled Steinberg plug-ins to start, then, third-party ones.

EDIT : an alternate way of doing could be to start with an empty project and use the File > Import > Tracks from Project function, one track after another, from an already existing one.

Btw. You need to run latency mon for at least a few minutes. On your screen shot it’s showing 37 seconds. That’s not enough to show any deeper issues.

Thank you guys!

I will try everything later today or tomorrow after a Zoom call. Right now, Cubase was performing flawlessly after a restart but that can change in the next minute.

@ Phil: In the first stint I had about five minutes. I couldn’t make a screenshot because of a crash. Nevertheless I will run LatencyMon again later today.

You don’t need to have Cubase running and trying to run it is not necessary. The goal of using Latency Mon is to check your system for anything that could ‘affect’ the running of your ASIO performance and subsequently Cubase which could result in dropouts etc.

This could be a Driver or a process ‘kicking in’ in the background causing an interferance. (nvidia caused people grief for years with interrupts)

Settings in the BIOS can also improve or make worse the situation.

Using Autoruns:

to clean up unnesseray start up processes is useful. As well as Systeminformer which can show what is going on at any one time.

As a side note: Backup your preferences folder and put is somewhere safe. Delete the Current Cubase 15 Preferences folder and rename any earlier Cubase version preferences folders to avoid automatic preferences copying over.

I think we need to find out what exactly the problem at hand is.

If I understood @PeterZ correctly,

The audio stream is ok, no dropouts and crackles.

In that case, LatencyMon is not really relevant here imho.

This seems to be the problem:

Maybe this needs to be clarified a bit more precisely. It seems to me that the GUI thread(s) don’t get enough cpu time, but that is just interpretation.

I would also support the suggestion of starting with a simple project, then build from there, and with luck, maybe isolate the actual root cause.

Have you shut down internet and wifi ?

So, I want to let you know that Cubase seems to work normally again. Yesterday LatencyMon reported troubles with a DPC routine. There were not many drivers I could deactivate, so I just reinstalled my NVIDIA driver in a minimum configuration. Funny thing is, that even when the driver was deactivated, I had troubles with Cubase. I also took the Genelec GLM app out of the startup list.

Now LatencyMon doesn’t show any problem after 19 minutes.

Running a new and empty project worked but I didn’t ind the time to load it with plugins.

At the end Cubase is working again even if I don’t know what happened and what solved the issue. I just followed your recommendations and obviously they have been perfect. Again I want to thank you for taking time to help me out. This community - that’s you! - is just great!

Enjoy your weekend!

Hm, I have seen this as well with Cubase Pro 15. Exact same symptoms. Audio is working okay, but commands are delayed for several seconds. Note that every other program is working fine, it’s just Cubase showing these problems.

OTOH Cubase Pro 14 had been working flawlessly on the same system ever since it came out, so I really doubt it has anything to do with some driver.

In my opinion its either a bug in Cubase 15 or a problem with the most recent Windows Update.

Yes, it looks like there are too many cooks preparing the same meal. Cubase, Plugin programmers, Windows, NVIDIA …… and SSL.

After my last message, I had another crash. Then I found a mail in my mailbox, that said SSL has some updates. Installed those and no problem now for hours.

But I also reinstalled the NVIDIA driver, since LatancyMon showed problems with it again. So, was it SSL or Cubase or NVIDIA or windows. Who knows, it’s all try and error.

Have you solved your issue? I’ve been having a hell of a time for the past month exactly like you said. Between Cubase 15, Nvidia, SSL UF1 and UC1 and Windows update. I even did a fresh install of Windows. Spent a day installing drivers and plugins and trying to get my workflow back in order. Just to have the same issues happening. It’s either it freezes mid session or completely crashes. Also changing the buffer size in cubase would not change on my RME and vice versa. That hasn’t happened since reinstalling Windows but time will tell.

Been trying to follow the thread.. latencymon will find problems but have you optimized your PC to run a daw such as turn off windows update and a long list of other tweaks.. your using alot of USB connections. And did you completely uninstall the drivers for your Nvidia card? There a free tool to check your cores on your cpu to see which ones are in demand.. I had similar problems it took about 3 days to fix and leaving my PC on to see if any hiccups were still happening.. also isbyour PC online? Ehthernet or wifi connection?
