Cubase 15 no audio playback or meters on recorded audio tracks

I have recently upgraded to Cubase 15 from 10.5. Everything is great if I open old projects, but if I record new audio tracks it shows me a waveform recording, but on playback there is no audio or metering??

Everything seems routed correctly, and works on old projects?

Hello and welcome to the forum,

So what you are saying is that if you open an old project, it plays back as expected, but when you add a new audio track and record on that, there is no sound and no meters?

Does this also happen if you create a new, empty project in Cubase 15, add one track and record something on it?

This would happen when Monitoring is activated on the track.

So, I tried to record a new audio track in an old project that I can hear. When I recorded a new track I can hear it now, but its not the audio, its like pure distortion or slightly modulating noise. It still shows what I would think is a proper waveform. Im assuming there’s some setting somewhere I need to check?

no ,that’s not it, i usually monitor through my converter. Long time user, I assume its a new setting somewhere?

Yes, and as I added in another comment, if I record a new track to the old project it plays back weird noise, while showing what looks to be a regular waveform.

A setting to switch between normal and pure distorted slightly modulating sound doesn’t sound like something that would be that useful. I wouldn’t spend too much time searching for that :wink:

Take the audio file with the correct looking waveform that doesn’t work in Cubase, play it outside of Cubase….how does it sound there?

Give some information on your system…what o/s, what recording interface, which driver is selected, what sample rate are you using, did you confirm sample rate of interface matches it?

I mean, that would be a fun switch, just not in this usage.

The tracks I “record” are not able to be played outside of cubase. (using vlc player)

@Grim

Not enough info provided to even begin diagnosing this atm.

sorry

windows 11 pro (up to date)
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core Processor (3.40 GHz)
Installed RAM 32.0 GB

Focusrite Clarett 8pre usb (up to date drivers)

FOCUSRITE usb asio drivers

HW Sample rate 48khz - Clarett also set to 48khz

record rate 48/24.

Just tested again, this time i do get audio playback but its still static/squelching, like ina previous saved project test.

@Grim

Do you have any other program that can record audio via ASIO to rule out a hardware/driver problem?

Are you monitoring the audio via Cubase or direct monitoring…..does it sound normal when monitoring in Cubase (direct muted)

They should be.

agree, but why is cubase recording garbage?

monitoring sounds fine, I generally monitor through my interface.

I downloaded a tiny app to record and it recorded fine with my interface.

only newly recorded tracks in cubase is the issue.

I don’t know what this means.
What does the recorded .wav file sound like in VLC Player?

Yeah…it’s unclear from your wording if the tracks are not able to play outside of Cubase at all or if they play as garbage?

What app did you download….does it use ASIO?

While you might generally use direct monitor, the important thing we need to know is if the monitoring sounds good monitoring via cubase with interface monitor disabled. Obviously this tells us if the fault is in the input signal or in the record process.

I was using NCH RecordPad. It is using the focusrite driver, cannot tell if it is ASIO.

The recorded files will not open in VLC, though the properties say they are 48k, 24bit audio files.

Yes the monitoring is fine.

The wave form is fine.

I am running Cubase as Administrator.

@Grim

I would try to uninstall and reinstall the asio driver. Then try cubase in safe mode. Also check the record path is where you think it is and maybe try a different drive if you have options

So just to summarize. New Cubase 15 all audio plays back fine (Samples, previous recorded audio) but if you record in Cubase 15 the audio doesn’t play back correctly in Cubase and not at all outside of Cubase, example VLC or media player
So the problem is with your Cubase recording process. Have you tried a different sample rate / bit depth?
Have you tried recording in 15 and transferring the file to your earlier Cubase version to see if plays back.
Double check your input settings and the ASIO driver settings.

Hi Disjointed, this sounds like the Monitor button might still be active on the track because when that little speaker icon next to the Record button is lit up orange, Cubase listens to the live input rather than playing back the recorded file on the disk. Try toggling that speaker icon off to see if your audio and meters come back immediately, as this is a very common oversight when recording new tracks.
