My setup relies heavily on custom MIDI Remote scripts and a lot of custom mappings made through the mapping assistant for multiple external MIDI controllers. This is something I built slowly over a long time. One day I opened Cubase and suddenly the Mapping Assistant was completely empty for all my MIDI devices. Every single custom mapping was gone. At first I thought I messed something up, but then I checked the folder where Cubase stores these files ( Documents/Steinberg/Cubase/MIDI Remote/User Settings). All my json files were still there, but every single one was reduced to about 1kb and was basically empty.
Luckily I use a regular backup system, so I was able to restore older versions of the json files and copy them back into the folder. After that, everything showed up again in Cubase. But this has now happened three times, totally randomly, and only since updating to Cubase 15.
My only way out of this for now is restoring the files from backup whenever this happens, which is obviously not a solution. I can imagine a lot of people losing their entire custom mapping setup if they do not have backups. Have you guys experienced this too? does anyone know what exactly causes it?
The Forum Titled: βMidi Remote Mappings Disappearedβ covers a lot of angst and some ideas that can be a workaround during the interim.
What I have done (so far successfully) is create an app in the Automator.app accessory on a Mac. (Sorry I cannot speak for a Windows installation)
The file that changes things or gets changed automatically is in the MIDI Remote folder. The path for this folder on my mac is Documents > Steinberg > Cubase > MIDI Remote
When I have a functioning map while using Cubase or I make changes to my mapping, I go to Finder, copy and save the good MIDI Remote folder to a storage disk.
When I relaunch Cubase and discover my maps are gone, I exit from Cubase, go to the MIDI Remote Folder and send it to trash. Then, I copy my saved MIDI Remote folder to the Documents/Steinberg/Cubase directory. When I reload Cubase, the mapping is there.
I have automated the procedure of saving a clean MIDI Remote folder to storage and reloading a clean/functioning MIDI Remote folder by using the Automater app on the Mac. I created an .app that will do all the moving, deleting and saving in one click.
