Cubase 8.5 Quit Unexpectedly

Hi there

My cubase 8.5 keep quit unexpectedly since I update to El Capitan to my macbook pro.

I already updated the e licenser and updated to Cubase 8.5.1 but still the same issue.

Here it is the whole crash report. Please let me know if is just the problem with the status update compatibility with the Capitan or if is another problem.

Hi,

I am also having this issue, i have sent through my crash reports already, but the issue is the exact same as you are experiencing.

My Cubase crashes unexpectedly on El Capitan with latest cubase 8.5.10, latest macbook pro pro retina mid 2015.

The steps i have tried are, removed plug ins and even tried deleting preferences and loading up into safe mode.

Please advise.

No, Still having the issue, even started a brand new project instead of loading an old one. Seems the crashes are getting more frequent, yesterday i tried saving and as soon as i hit the save button it crashed, then it crashed again upon exiting about an hour later…would be nice if Steinberg got back with some advice.

I just installed both 8 and 8.5, and they both quit on launch. I don’t even make it past the splash screen.

7.5 runs fine.

In my case I had an incompatible plugin. I removed it and 8.5 runs fine.

Same thing here since upgrading to El Capitan. It doesn’t happen every time, but Cubase seems more likely to crash whenever I open the browser window (e.g. when using Save as… or choosing a new path to export audio files to). It didn’t have similar issues on Mavericks.

Same issue with me, new mac, latest OS and Cubase. Lots of crashes, particularly on saves and auto saves. Could be an incompatible plugin, but honestly am I expected to go through all of those and try to figure out which one(s) are the potential culprit? We should be able to expect more from Sternberg. It’s a pro recording platform, right? Past versions have been way more stable, correct? Just hoping that they can at least respond on the matter, and not with “work around” solutions or canned “who cares” fixes like, just uninstall and reinstall the program. Been there done that. We need Sternberg to acknowledge the problem and fix it.

The latest OS for Mac is macOS Sierra. Are you using that? It’s unsupported right now by nearly every company, so of course there will be plenty of crashes. Cubase 8 and 8.5 are very stable for me and many other people.

Try removing all the third party plugins you have. It’s probably one of those. In my case it was an old 32-bit plugin.

Then I added them back in a few at a time. It didn’t take long. And I have a lot I accumulated over the years.

Cubase comes with so many great plugs that you rarely need any others.

I have this same problem, quits expectedly after a while, at seemingly random times. Thanks to auto-save nothing too too serious, yet…

Thing is, this crash/quit behaviour happens on 2 separate MacPros and in Logic as well, same symptoms. And only since El Capitan.

This tells me it’s either something in El Capitan, or one of my 3rd party plug ins (I have and use loads, on both machines, and similar VST list for Logic and Cubase…)

Yes, that’s your responsibility. If you have any incompatible 3rd party plugins that has nothing to do with Steinburg. You need to contact the developer for an update.

David I disagree. Possibly there are plugins out there that really can cause a conflict, but I keep my choices fairly simple. I use pretty tried and true plugs like UA and Waves, which I’ve never had a problem in Cubase with in previous versions. So again, really we should not be expected to figure out what is causing instability with Cubase. I’ve been with Cubase since the early 90’s, this is the first time I’ve been ready to look at a different recording software.

Steinberg, consider the number of people here that are asking you to focus on the instability issues. Please live up to your past standard. Thanks.

Honestly I’m not familiar with Sierra. I’m in El Capitan (10.11.6). All software on my system is up to date, and I’m a longtime Cubase guy, so I’ve figured out how to keep things running smoothly over the years - until now. Since I upgraded to 8.5 at the beginning of the year I’ve been having so many crashes. Can’t even trust hitting the save button. Sometimes it’s cool, but way too often I lose my work.

And on that, I’m finding the autosave to be glitchy as well. I have a lot of crashes while the program is autosaving. We are paying for a pro recording platform. Pro tools aside, we are paying a hefty price to be getting a subpar recording system. Possibly I’ve just been spoiled by the stability of previous versions of Cubase over the years. But I do expect more.

In my case this was caused by one plugin, the Eventide channel strip. It’s not an old plugin. It prevented Cubase from launching without crashing. I removed it and all is well. Meanwhile I have much older plugins that work fine. Steinberg invented the VST plugin. I think they know how to stick to the specs.

Mac or Windows?

On a Mac the VST plugins are either in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/, or ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/. There’s also the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/ folder, which is where Steinberg puts some plugins.

All my third party plugins were in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/

Some of the plugins are in the application bundle, but you wouldn’t be messing with those.

On Windows, I have no idea. They never seem to have obvious locations for things.
