I’m thinking of trying the Cubase 9 trial will it mess up my Cubase 8.5 installation?
I’m expecting lots of blacklisted plugs

No, it’s a completely separate installation.
It will only blacklist plugins for use (or rather NOT use!) within Cubase 9. You can run 8.5 as before.
(I have both on my systems without issue).
