Cubase AI Crashes on Startup - Mac OS High Sierra

I have been trying to run Cubase Ai9 on my Mid 2010 iMac for some time now. It used to run until the update to Mac OS High Sierra and has not run since then.

When installing I do get some issues such as “eLicenser Control” is not optimized for your Mac. That should not still be happening. I have to update it every time I do a fresh download and install. This should have been sorted by now.

Moving on, the version I downloaded from Steinberg yesterday 15th June 2018 was Cubase AI9 v9.0.30 (64bit) - Built on Jul 20 2017. Had to update again after starting the install.

So finally it installs and I run it. Cubase goes through the loading VST’s etc and then just after detecting the audio drivers and looking like it will start I get a pop up saying “Cubase LE AI Elements quit unexpectedly” and from then on it won’t run. This has been the case for the past 12 months.

All my other software runs fine. Logic Pro X, Presonus Studio One 3, Ableton Live 9. So why in particular does Cubase have a problem running?

I could of course just ditch it and stay with Logic or Studio but I have a specific reason to run Cubase and right now it’s just not playing ball and no one seems to be able to tell me why.

Graphics ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
Hard Drive 240Gb SSD

So definitely not cutting edge but works for everything else.

Hi,

Please update to the latest Cubase 9.0.40. If it’s still crashing, please share the source *.crash dump.

I now have cubase Ai 9.5 but it still crashes at the same point.

Could this be a plugin issue? I notice that every time I start Cubase it is asking for the ‘Waves 9.1 Plug-ins folder’ but I don’t have Waves 9.1 installed. Where would I find and delete that on a mac? It’s worth eliminating from the possible causes at least?

It wasn’t the Waves plugin. I found where that was and removed it. The Cubase startup no longer looks for it but still it crashes.

Can’t post the whole crash report here as there is a 6000 character limit. I have however contacted support directly and they are looking into it.

Have to say though I have never had any of these issues with any other DAW software. Why Cubase?

You can attach the crash dump file as an attachment here and I can resolve it.

We found out it was the VSTPlugManager.bundle that was causing the crash. Removing it from the Components folder allowed Cubase to start up. Of course we still don’t know why it was the cause of the issue or what effect removing it will have on the functionality of the software but at least the programs starts now so that is a step forward :slight_smile:

Hi,

I would recommend to remove this component. Some plug-in is faulty and make it crash. You should find out, what plug-in is it, make sure it’s up to date and get in touch with the vendor.

Attached crash dump would make it clear immediately.

As mentioned I can’t attach a crash dump in this forum because it is too long to post and I can’t “attach” it as a pdf.

I have been in touch with Cubase support and they have been very helpful in resolving the issue. I am sure it is indeed a plugin but the odd thing is I don’t have any loaded, or rather I shouldn’t have.

There are two plugins I think might be the root cause of the problem and these are both from the Roland Cloud however they were removed some time ago but still show as options in Cubase. If I try to load either Cubase crashes.

The frustrating thing is these plugins do not crash any other DAW. If I try to load a plugin that has been uninstalled as in this case I simply get a message saying it cannot be found. Why does Cubase just crash and the others don’t?

Is there any recommended way to attach a crash report to this forum?

Thanks but I don’t use any of those services. Not entirely sure why this forum doesn’t allow attachments. It would make life a LOT easier for forum members. My own forum has allowed attachments for the last 15 years without any issues and I don’t have the same resources as Steinberg.

Anyway I decided just not to use the Roland plugins and if I do want to use them I will fire up Logic or Studio One.

Thanks but I gave up on cubase and now use Presonus Studio Pro. I got so used the the Presonus interface that it is easier and quicker for me to record with that DAW than spend time on Cubase trying to get it to do what I need.
