I’ve recently bought Cubase 15 Artist after trialling it for a while, and I am noticing that whenever I record audio through my headphones using the audio ports on the back of my PC (The pink, blue, and green ones), the waveform is basically just a rectangle. (See screenshot attached) When I play it back, you can hear really loud high-pitched screeching almost like fingers on a chalkboard but amplified a ton. However, when I try and use another audio driver (e.g. ASIO4ALL), it works fine but personally, ASIO4ALL doesn’t work well at all with my setup as I commonly am on voice calls when making music.
This is the waveform I get:

Hi and welcome to the forum,
What kind of Audio Device do you use in this case? Do you also use the built-in audio device?
Really? For artistic reasons? Sounds interesting.
I use the same device (My Headphones) with both the Steinberg ASIO Driver and ASIO4ALL.

Yeah. I do have mics, but they are a pain to set up and use because i don’t have an audio interface. Also, if I’m making something and need to quickly record, my headphones are always on hand for me to use so it makes sense.
Hi,
I would strongly recommend using real microphone and Audio Device.
If you want to stay with your headphones-mic, try to increase the Buffer Size, when using Steinberg Built-in ASIO Driver.
Just to clarify – you’re using the headphones with another application making voice calls, while simultaneously trying to record in Cubase the audio from the built-in microphone in the headphones?
The Steinberg Built-in ASIO Driver has a fixed buffer size, doesn’t it?
Technically you have an audio interface, otherwise you would not be able to record audio into your computer. Even if it is a chip on the motherboard it is still an audio interface. I assume it is some Realtek chip?
It is a realtek chip. I just spoke to an AI agent and it turns out that I haven’t had the correct audio drivers installed since I got this computer. I installed them and now the problem is fixed. Thank you all for the guidance.
