Cubase External Sync via USB – PA5X Still Starts Automatically

Hi all,

I’m using Cubase Pro 15 with Korg PA5X connected via USB MIDI.

  • External Sync works correctly: Cubase controls the PA5X tempo and clock.

  • Problem: When I toggle OFF the ACTIVATE EXTERNAL SYNC button in Cubase, and then press Play, the PA5X still starts its rhythm automatically.

  • It seems Cubase is still sending clock, or PA5X thinks it’s synced.

I want to fully stop External Sync using just the button, without manually changing Destinations every time.

Has anyone found a way to disconnect External Sync completely via the button over USB MIDI?

Thanks

Hi,

You are talking about:

where the PA5X is in the Destinations section. But you are also talking about:

which is in the Sources section.

So, if Cubase should be the master of the tempo and PA5X should follow, the Sources are set to Internal, and you are interested in the Destinations. If you want to stop sending the synchronisation data out, just disable the given MIDI Port.

As far as I know “External Sync” is used when Cubase needs to be sync slave.
In your use case you describe Cubase to be sync master, though. In this case External Sync needs be disabled.

Can you post screenshots of your sync settings dialog?

Thanks for the replies. I still need a way to disable External Sync for the PA5X with one click or a keyboard shortcut.

Right now, I have to:

  1. Open Activate External Sync

  2. Go to Destinations

  3. Deselect PA5X

  4. Press OK

This is too cumbersome, especially since I repeat it dozens of times per session.

Is there a faster workflow or shortcut to fully stop the sync without going through these settings each time.

Hi,

I’m afraid, there is no a single-click way.

Why do you do that? What is your use case?

This is really unfortunate
Anyway, thank you very much for your help, Martin.

I think you don’t really mean “Activate External Sync”.
grafik
Activate External Sync is used when you need to synchronize Cubase to Midi Time Code masters like tape machines or video tape machines.

I assume you actually mean to have to go into the “Project Synchronization Setup…” dialog.

Thank you very much, Johnny.
Yes, this is exactly what I’m looking for.
I have excellent experience with MIDI in general, but device synchronization is the one area I’m not very familiar with unfortunately.

Perhaps it is easier to disable sync on your PA5X? If not, you could explore using 3rd party tools, such as an intermediate virtual MIDI port that could easily be turned on/off.

Thanks a lot @mlib — really good suggestions :+1:

I like the idea of using an intermediate MIDI layer instead of constantly changing sync destinations. I’m going to use Bome MIDI Translator to control the MIDI Clock with a single button press.

Much appreciated
