Cubase has the best GUI out of all the DAWs

Yeah update is very good, but even playing around with it for a few hours the night 10.5 was released i went back to Cubase afterwards and was far more creative. I don’t know what it is with Cubase but things just seem to sound better and i feel more encouraged to build a track. I know all DAWs theoretically should sound the same - but Cubase, honestly, just sounds better! lol

I hit a wall with Logic very quickly, even with the update i made a few loops and didn’t progress. A little story:- about 2-3 years back i hit a dry patch where i couldn’t come up with any ideas, and maybe my mind goes back to that place while within the UI of Logic as i spent so many hours procrastinating with it. It got the point of instead of doing music i was setting up controllers and trying to get basic MIDI gear to act as Mackie controllers etc. - It’s a really bad state to get in when everything is focused on the gear, and not the passion of making music.

I’ve got hundreds of ideas in Logic that are 8/16-bar loops over the years. But after using Cubase for a year vast majority of projects are 2-3+ minute long with more defined structure. I think the arrangement and chord track functions really help me work, i never realised that i needed that crutch perhaps? I’m not using it to ‘cheat’, just purely as a backbone and easy recall of the ideas i have. It’s brilliant.

The ability to pick up a project in Cubase and have the chord and arrangement information ready to go is gold for me, even the notepad options for lyrics just works well. I only get 5-6 hours a week to do music at the moment with other commitments, but it’s been hugely influential in my enjoyment of music creation once again.

I agree about the mixer, mixer is a total mess

Weird, I’m totally fine with the mixer apart from needing to be able to lock the mixer/configuration.

I think understanding/having hotkeys for controlling mixer stuff and getting into that workflow helps with mixer.

word

For DAW I agree 1080p/1440p is fine, however if you have to use your screen for more than just a DAW 4k has been becoming standard a long long time. I have to use my monitors for many uses besides a DAW including video, photo, gaming - and it is getting harder to even find 1080p monitors in the form factors and quality I need.

Other DAWs have fixed it, most notably Ableton and Bitwig by simply having a proper scaler for legacy plugins when on a 4k screen. Also ofc Mac OS works fine as they have a tighter OS/resolution integration, hopefully I am not forced into MacOS land just because of HiDPI support!

Praying for Nuendo 11 to come out soon to the rescue! :unamused:

Here is my screen on 4K HiDPI with cutout plugins:

As you see Waves, Arturia, Native Instruments VSTs are unusable:

Yeah I agree with everything you’ve said. Other than I see logic 10.5s live loops ableton style Clip launcher Section as a form of cubases arrangement track. It’s similar to maschine too. And it’s quite an effective way of coming up with ideas super quickly and then arranging them into songs. So I’m curious to try out making a song with Logic Pro x and see if my workflow and creativity is boosted or remains the same. I’ll probably end up using both daws and alternate between working in different songs in both I think.
