Cubase MP3 handling/Audimee problem

Hi,

I’ve been testing the vocal conversion service Audimee which, among other things, lets you transform a female voice into a male voice. It seems to work ok, except for the fact that the files being spit out by Audimee are way out of sync with the ones I feed into it - enough so that it is plainly visible when the files are lined up next to each other in Cubase:

So far, I have only tested the free option which only lets you convert to MP3 rather than WAV, and I’m wondering if it is the mp3 format which is causing the syncing issues. Either way, I’m pretty sure Cubase is causing the problems here, because when I line the files up in a different DAW (Mixcraft) they are perfectly in sync:

So, what’s up with this. Could there be some Cubase setting I need to change? For one thing, I wonder why both files are showing up in the pool window as WAV files although the converted one is definitely an MP3.

One way to figure out if the issue is indeed the mp3 format would obviously be to try out a paid Audimee option instead, but I don’t really want to spend money on it if there’s some general incompatibility between Audimee and Cubase, so I’m hoping someone on here can clear up the matter.

I don’t know about the rest, but Cubase always converts files to WAV, whatever the original format is.

The paid Audimee subscription doesn’t make any difference to the output file (at least the paid version that outputs in MP3). I’ve found that moving the imported clip 1/64 ahead of the original position seems to work.

Are you sure about that? The only thing I can find about this in the manual is the stuff about “On Import Audio Files” in the preferences window. In my pref. window the option to “Convert to Project Settings …” is unchecked. But it does make sense that Cubase would prefer to work with one file type only. Maybe the solution is to convert the Audimee MP3s to Wav in some other program before importing them into Cubase.

EDIT: I checked the format of the imported MP3 inside of Cubase and it has been converted to WAV, so you’re definitely right about that.

Moving the files manually is definitely an option, but it seems a little wild that that should be necessary. With all the things Cubase can do you would think it can also handle MP3s in a meaningful way.

Hmm, I don’t see a paid version that outputs mp3s. Are you sure you have tested one of the paid versions?

I see - they have changed the structure and the Starter $12 month now does .wav output. I haven’t used it for a few months now since I got the Sonarworks plugin which is excellent:

BTW Cubase handles mp3s perfectly - it is the output from Audimee that has the delay …

Thanks for the tip. I may have to try that instead. Definitely seems convenient to be able to use a plugin rather than dealing with all the exporting/importing.

Well, apparently not, if Mixcraft can handle it better. I think the issue may be that MP3 files come with a bunch of metadata which Cubase then interprets as audio data when converting the files to Wav. Seems like Mixcraft is able to somehow discard that data. But I am now talking about things that I don’t understand.

Hey, that’s my territory!
:grinning:

This may be a silly suggestion, but could it be an issue between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz audio settings in Cubase and the mp3 sample rate?

That was my first thought too, but if you look at the info from the pool window both files are 24 bit/44,1 khz. The mp3s being output by Audimee are also 44,1khz (I checked this in Foobar since Cubase apparently instaconverts any imported mp3).
