CUBASE - Playhead not moving - no audio

Good afternoon!

I work on two PCs running Windows 11 and Cubase PRO 15, both of which are the latest versions. I use an RME Fireface (USB) interface in my recording studio (TS) and a Focusrite Scarlet 8i6 3rd Generation interface in my home studio (HS).

I opened a Cubase 15 project ‘C’ with almost 100 tracks from my recording studio computer (TS) #1 on my home studio computer (HS) #2 to continue editing it there.

Project ‘C’ (version 20251211) consists primarily of audio tracks in 24-bit 44.1, two MIDI tracks (piano and drums) and a more complex subgroup routing.

The project has already been exchanged several times between the two computers TS#1 and HS2# without any problems. There are numerous iterations of the project with a date stamp.

When opening it in HS2 today, I noticed that the playhead did not move, even though the play icon in the transport field was green and activated. There was no audio output!

The routing of the AUDIO CONNECTIONS, I have been using the control room for a long time, was unchanged compared to other projects. Other projects or older iterations of project ‘C’ can be played back without any changes.

I deleted tracks, rebuilt subgroups and routings, deactivated plugins, increased the buffer size, reset programme settings and also imported all tracks from project ‘C’ (version 20251211) into an empty project for testing purposes.

Still no playhead movement and no audio!

Only when global latency compensation was enabled did playback start in all cases and the playhead move. Unfortunately, that’s not a solution!

As a test, I inserted another INSTRUMENT TRACK completely at random into project ‘C’ (version 20251211) and activated the monitor (speaker icon) on this track. The instrument track itself was muted and not routed to any output!

However, the playhead immediately started moving and the audio output started. I was able to listen to the mix as planned with all plugins activated in the current editing state.

As soon as I deselected the monitor (speaker icon) of the instrument track, the playhead stopped again. I have been a Cubase user from the very beginning and am now completely at a loss! Many thanks in advance!

Can you please make sure that External Synchronisation is completely switched off?

@Johnny_Moneto

Hello Johnny, Thanks for your swift reply!

External synchronisation was and is switched off.

I have been testing the project in CUBASE 14 PRO in the meantime. It is working in CUBASE PRO 14. The play head is moving as expected there.

I went back to CUBASE PRO 15 and no play head movement nor audio.

I turned off the ASIO GUARD then. The play head was moving as expected.

The Audio Guard was causing the issue. Maybe the large number of subgroups triggerdd that?

Interesting. ASIO Guard should not have this effect.
@Martin.Jirsak , maybe you know to who this should be brought to attention?
Focusrite Scarlet 8i6 3rd Generation, project works on other computer as well as on C14 on this computer.
