Cubase Pro 12 does not play video properly

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to work on a video project but my Cubase Pro 12 does not play video correctly on my Win 11 PC
After importing the video file I can see the audio and the thumbnails.I match the project settings with the video.
When I press play,it plays the 1-2 frame correctly but then it stops while the audio is playing properly. When I change the cursor to any other time positions ,it shows the thumbnail but after pressing play it stops again after playing 1-2 frames of the video as you may see the example attached
I tried to convert the video to several codecs including MOV and tried different videos but result is the same.

I have RTX 4060 16 gb,32 GB Ram and Ryzen 7
Quicktime is up to date and VLC and Quicktime plays all the videos properly.

Do you have any solutions for this situation?

Mov is a container and could be a lot of different codecs.
Is the actual codec you use on the list of supported ones (and not noted as an exception)?

I tried to to convert the file to all of accepted codecs but result is the same.
It was originally H264 which was supported and also I tried MOV Pro Res too…

I dont get black screen as common issue but thumbnails are shown and playback only show the first 1-2 frames and stops playing

I also tried on Cubase 8.5 Pro but still the same:(

Hello @serhand - you could try to download and install this utility:-
MediaInfo - Download

Then use it to analyse your actual video file (it provides data format, codecs, bitrates and much more detailed technical info). Then post a screen grab of the results here. Might help narrow things down.

FWIW - your system seems capable enough to handle video playback inside Cubase, just fine.

Is it just this one file, or do you see it with others too.? If so, have you a small (dummy.?) clip you could upload to a file-sharing site and post a link here to download it.? This is so others can try and experiment/reproduce the problem on their systems. Of course, it may rule out being an issue with the file itself and point to something in your system needing a closer look…

Trying using the CPU graphics, if any.

Didn’t Apple recommend that ALL PC users stop using Quicktime? Which was why Steinberg dropped it like a hot potato, some years ago?

From the article:

Why Did Apple Discontinue QuickTime Player for Windows?

Apple likely discontinued QuickTime Player for Windows for several reasons:

  • Security Concerns: Without security updates, QuickTime Player became a potential target for hackers.
  • Focus on Apple Ecosystem: Apple likely wanted to focus its resources on its own operating system and devices.
  • Low Usage: The usage of QuickTime Player on Windows might have been declining, making it less of a priority for Apple.

I just downloaded to make sure if the problem has anything with it.

I have tried so many different video files with some many different codecs.
Strangely, only that video file (on the left side of the screenshots ) played properly in Cubase.
The video on the right side has the same codec but Cubase wont play the video.
The only difference between them is sample rate and bits per sample
I have no idea what causes the problem and what is the solution?

Here is a sample video that Im having problems playing in Cubase

Sample Video

Actually the sample rate is the same…audio bit depth really shouldn’t be a problem.

Video Frame rate is different - did you match in project?

And the audio codec is different, the non working video doesn’t show which codec is used only tells the channel info, not sure why that would happen but might have some bearing?

Hey there - this worked fine for me after changing the project frame-rate to 50fps:

I’m on MacOS 15.5, C14.0.32 Pro

I didn’t have to do anything else on my end, just an FYI…

Yeah…also works fine here on W11…whether I change frame rate or not.
But I’m on 14 and don’t have older versions installed to test.

Yeah, not much value in my posting that since they are on C12, but figured I’d at least provide some feedback…

Well it confirms the issue isn’t purely with the video…doesn’t hurt to know that. :+1:

Thanks for posting… however, as others have reported there is no problem playing back this video here - though I too am on C14. I no longer have access to C12 to test.

Seems the video engine in C12, in this case, was simply not up to the task…? Don’t know what else to suggest, sorry.
