Project Master Tuning / Concert Pitch Reference
Please add a project-wide concert pitch setting, stored with the project (Project Setup, and ideally visible in the toolbar next to tempo / root key).
Default: A4 = 440.00 Hz
Presets: 415 / 430 / 432 / 442 / 443 / 444
Custom value in Hz (0.01 Hz) and/or cents offset from 440
This should be a reference frequency, not a global pitch-shift of the mix. It should not change audio length or formants by default.
What should follow the project reference
VariAudio
Pitch grid, snap-to-note, Correct Pitch, cents readout, and MIDI extract should use the project A4. Right now a performance recorded or written off 440 never sits on the grid, so correction is always a workaround.
Pitch Correct
Detection and target notes should use the same A4. The existing per-instance Master Tuning control is an output detune, not a project reference.
Steinberg instruments and tools
HALion Sonic, Groove Agent, Retrologue, Padshop, Sampler Track, Tuner, loop/MediaBay preview, and any stock instrument with a Master Tune / A4 parameter should inherit the project value, with a per-instance override.
Optional VST3 follow
If a plug-in exposes a standard master-tune / A4 parameter, offer “Follow project tuning.” Instruments that do not support it stay unchanged.
Why Fine Tune / Transpose / PitchShifter are not enough
Per-event Fine Tune and offline pitch shift do not retarget VariAudio’s grid, do not keep vocals and virtual instruments on one reference, and do not live with the project the way tempo and root key do.
Use cases
Orchestral and scoring work at A = 442–443
Historical / period pitch (415, 430, 432, etc.)
Sessions tracked off 440
Full projects written at a non-440 reference so VariAudio and instruments agree
Melodyne, Auto-Tune, MuseScore, and several other DAWs already have a project or master reference. Cubase still treats 440 as fixed for VariAudio and related tools.
A single Project Setup field plus “follow project tuning” on Steinberg pitch tools and instruments would close a request that has been on these forums for more than a decade.
