I have been away from Cubase for a few years, being very sick and is almost 100% well or close enough now to well, that I really wanna get startet again creating music again. My Cubase Pro is ver. 9.5, so a bit outdated.
First I wanted to hear if I can still buy instrument packs + sounds and loop packs etc. at Steinbergs webstore that will work on my older Cubase Pro 9.5 version? Or do I need to upgrade the whole of Cubase Pro?
I really wanna upgrade to the latest Cubase Pro, but I think it is unrealistic and very much out of my reach financially at this point. I am sure it must be very expensive upgradingfrom a 9.5 version, so it will not be an option for me on sick pay. I have already deleted my Adobe account with Photoshop etc. because it was too expensive and out of my price range at this time.
Will I be able to update VST & Helion to newer versions? So I can go on Steinbergs homepage to buy some new instruments sounds etc. Is that possible? Or is my version totally outdated?
I am seeking info and advice on what to do, I really wanna start composing again asap, but I wanted a new Cello instrument pack and more, but I won’t buy them if they doesn’t work, so I need help from someone who is up-to-date in this area. Most important questions is: Do you still have the USB dongle?
If you do, then it’s just a matter of installing all the software (eLicenser, Cubase, HALion, etc) and it should all work.
I have 9.5 on my system, and ALL plugins are working OK - HALion 7, Kontakt 7, Waves, UAD, etc.

Awesome, thank you. Yes I have installed my 9.5 version, so I did found out it was all scrapt for a new system I am yet to find out what is.
My Cubase 9.5 works, well at least it starts up, but I have no idea if my old sound library still works. I hope so, I got a lot of good stuff in there. I think it works, but now I am thinking of getting some more sounds and instruments packs from the webstore, there are some good prices at the moment if I am not too late. There was done awesome Cellos at 80% I think it was and more. But will these new instrument packs work on my 9.5 version, I have no idea???
Since VST is an industry standard there really isn’t anything special about if the plug is from Steinberg or elsewhere. What’s important is the VST version. Any plug you buy today from anywhere should be VST3 which is fully supported in 9.5.
Over time Halion has added a bunch of new modules like FM synthesis. Older versions that don’t have those can’t play that content. So it depends on which specific synth engine in Halion a library uses if it will work in an older version of Halion.
My advice is:
Keep the Cubase you have. You can change it later whenever you want.
Upgrade to the latest Version of Halion so you can play content using any current synth engine.
To clarify the DAW (Cubase, Reason, etc.) determines which flavors of VSTi’s (2, 3 or both) it supports.
But the VSTi itself and not the DAW determines what presets & libraries it supports.
Keep in mind that a VSTi like Halion, GA or even Kontact are designed to function on any DAW. To do that they need to isolate their internal workings from the DAW. The way they do that is by communicating exclusively through the VST protocol. The VST protocol doesn’t really care about the content in part because that’s the Virtual Instrument’s job.
Actually the price is the same as if updating from Cubase 12. I think it’s around 250€, don’t ask me how many Kroner that is. 1800 to 1900 I assume.
The latest Cubase Pro includes the Iconica Sketch library, which comprises of some orchestral instruments.
