I am having a problem recording vocals in Cubase 12 Artist. Dozens of takes have been spoiled by drops in volume that then bounce up again. This happens at regular intervals: down at 6 1/3 measures and up at 12 2/3 measures.
I have tried different buffer settings. I have all inserts and sends (reverb) disabled while recording. There are no gates or compressors on the vocal track and none active while recording. I ran LatencyMon and found out that a Windows update had changed my power setting. Changing it back to High Performance did not help the recording issue. The BIOS is up to date.
If you have suggestions, I would be grateful.
Are the drop outs completely muting the record and if not, to what amount of dB are they occuring ?
Additionaly, could you make a screenshot of the audio track(s) used, this, with a comfortable vertical zooming and showing the involved waveforms of the recorded vocals on a sufficient amount of measures range ?
Hi,
Do you use any track preset? Is there any dynamics plug-in? Is there any Gate? Doesn’t the drop-out appears once the volume falls down bellow the Gate’s threshold?
You can see how the volume dips (about 5 db) at measure 59 1/3. It comes back at 65 2/3. This is exactly the same in all the lanes. I have tried recording at a different point in the project but the problem is the same.
I may have started this project from a track preset (can’t remember) but the only part of that would have been Fx Roomworks. I discovered a hidden instance of this this morning but the issue was the same after I had removed it.
The only insert on the vocal track is iZotope Nectar. I removed the gate and compressor modules from it. There is iZotope Ozone on the master track and a Neoverb track the vocal is routed to but I disable all inserts and sends when I record.
I think I have figured out what is happening. The normalize process was distorting things. If I try normalizing several lanes of recordings at once, they will all be distorted. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens even if I am only normalizing a single event with no other lanes in the same region. But, at least, most recordings are okay.
Do you have any advice for setting up the computer to avoid distortion when normalizing? I have ASIO4all and a fairly large buffer.
