Cubase saves project when using keyboard to navigate to Don't Save on Windows

I consider this a pretty serious bug as it has resulted in me overwriting projects unintentionally.

  1. Open a project
  2. Make minor changes
  3. Hit Ctrl-W to close the project
  4. When the “Do you want to save your project” dialog appears, hit Tab to select Don’t save and hit Enter

Notice that Cubase still saves the project despite your selection.

Tested on Windows 11 Pro and the very latest Cubase 13 Pro update 13.0.50.

The same happens on Mac and it has been going on for quite a while. It’s incredibly serious and it’s a large issue with tabbing everywhere in Cubase. This is so basic UI, that I can’t believe they are not fixing this!

I can confirm that this bug does NOT occur on the final release of Cubase Pro 11 and 12, this bug seems to have been introduced in Cubase Pro 13. If anyone knows how we can get the attention of the Steinberg developers so it can be fixed, that would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed my projects were being saved unintentionally in Cubase 13 since upgrading but didn’t know the trigger. I only finally discovered it when posting this issue as it was quite a subtle one.

This already was brought to the attention of the developers but it always helps to keep banging the drum.
I think what happened: With Cubase 13 Steinberg changed the code of how to handle dialogs. Initially there was a lot more missing than the Save dialog, that is mentioned here. Some of the shortcomings have been addressed already, others not yet.

The “Save your project” dialog misses support for cursor keys as well as proper support for the tab key. Enter and Esc are supported, though.
And so is… drumroll… the D key. Just press D to exit without saving.

Oh thanks heaps for the tip, the reason I didn’t even try D is usually the character would be underlined if you could type a single-letter shortcut to press the button.

e.g. this is VS Code where n would be the choice for not saving

and notice the Cubase dialog doesn’t underline anything

These are the details that matter in UI design!

Fingers crossed these rough edges are sorted out before Cubase 14 drops.

@Martin.Jirsak I wonder if you would be able to get this added to the bug tracker if not already and give it a push?

Thanks heaps!

Hi,

I’m sorry, I don’t understand, what exactly is the bug here.

Is it the fact, that the D command doesn’t work here? I wouldn’t expect it, because this is the native system Shortcut, which is not D, but it’s N instead. Or is the bug that the Tab doesn’t work in this system window? Or is the bug that the Shortcut letter is not underlined?

Btw, @Johnny_Moneto mentioned:

From this I expect, it has been reported to Steinberg already. Correct? So what is the point to report it again? Or am I wrong?

The main bug is that if you tab to “Don’t save” and hit enter, the project IS SAVED. Do I really need to explain to you how big that bug is? The secondary bug is that there is no way to know that it is possible to use “D” as a shortcut key in the dialog, because it is not underlined as it should be. The point of reporting it again, is that it is such an incredibly important bug, that it is impossible to think that it wouldn’t have been fixed at the first possibility if the developers were in fact aware of it. And as there is no way for us users to know what they are working on, we have to report things over and over again.

Would anyone who has updates to Cubase 14 be able to test if this issue is still present?

Thanks heaps!

Can anyone on the Cubase team assist with this please? cc @Matthias_Quellmann & @Ben_at_Steinberg.

Hi,

The behaviour is the same in Cubase 14.

Thanks for confirming, this was working correctly up to Cubase 12 and I’m hoping it’ll be a trivial fix for the devs.

I realise it may seem small on the surface, but for some of us, it is a very scary bug, because it can mean that we could overwrite an old version of a project without even realising. This has happened to me many times since upgrading to Cubase Pro 13 and I’m now honestly just thinking of going back to 12 instead of upgrading to 14.

This remains unresolved in 14.0.20.

When closing a project using CMD+W, the usual dialog appears with three options: “Don’t Save,” “Cancel,” and “Save.”
While tabbing through the options, the blue highlight moves correctly, but pressing “Enter” always triggers “Save,” regardless of the selected option.

The issue does not occur when using the mouse—only when navigating with the keyboard.

The workaround suggested, “Esc” for “Cancel” and “CMD+D” for “Don’t Save” work.
Would be nice if this could please be fixed in the next update.

I’m on the latest Sonoma (at the moment 14.7.3) on a M2 Ultra.
