Cubase stopped outputting MIDI audio

In trying to work in Cubase recently I’ve noticed something changed and it no longer (consistently) puts out MIDI sound.

A couple of things are happening, and I have tried all the online troubleshooting.

The issue first arose when I was building a new Vienna Ensemble template. I can get the first track in an instance of VEP to playback MIDI, but all subsequent tracks will stop outputting sound after selecting them once. The first time I change to them, they work, and as soon as I change off and then back, no sound output. There is still MIDI being sent to VEP as I can see it responding to my MIDI keyboard, and inside Opus I can see the keyboard being pressed when I press a key on my MIDI keyboard. When clicking the keyboard in Opus, no sound comes out either, though.

I figured it was an EastWest issue so I contacted them and tried troubleshooting with them to no avail. I then loaded a preset template from Cubase (a random Neo-Soul selection from their electronic templates that come with the program), and the sam issue persisted. I can hear audio loops from the DAW, but when I select a MIDI track, there is no sound output. This is using the Halion instrument as well.

I have checked all output routing and everything is set to the basic Stereo 1/2. I have checked my audio connections, tried Control Room, and double/triple checked that my Interface is being read and receiving information.

I am at a loss as to fixing this. I tried a fresh installation of Cubase, and that didn’t fix it.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before? I’m literally going crazy trying to diagnose this.

I have tried Logic and Ableton and those are working just fine with the same routing, so this is definitely a Cubase issue.

Running Mac OS Tahoe (most recent version), Cubase 14, Presonus Audiobox iTwo, Vienna Ensemble Pro 8.

Thank you.

Did you disable ASIO Guard, it should always be turned off when working with Vienna Ensemble.

For me everything works fine, but I’m still on VEP 7.

Yes, but the problem isn’t just VEP. I can’t get MIDI instruments loaded natively to output sound either. I load a preset template (Neo-Soul) from Cubase and, while audio and the drum patterns play at first, I can’t get anything from the Halion instruments to output. After hitting play the first time, all sound output stops in MIDI instruments. Everything says the Audio Connections are good and set correctly.

Here is a video of the problem:
Initially, there is sound on the piano. As soon as I click on another track and come back, you can see that the sound output stops. Nothing is going out audio-wise.

Maybe one of the preference files got banged up. You can try small by starting Cubase in Safe Mode (hold Cmd+Opt+Shift while launching Cubase), chosing to start Cubase with default program preferences.

Thanks, I just tried that, same thing is happening.
