Cubase Unstable and Unintuitive?

I am just writing this because I’m starting to question my own sanity. As an aspiring composer my goal right now is to optimize my workflow and have my hard- and software work together as smoothly and intuitively as possible.

I have now spent 15+ hours trying to map the Faders and Knobs of my M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61 Keyboard to my Quick Controls and Group Faders. After loosing my mind trying to get MIDI-Remote to work, I am now fiddling with the Generic Remote after downgrading to Cubase 13 Pro (As C14 seems to be way to unstable and buggy still).

I have had similar experiences trying to resolve an issue with no sound coming from my VST instruments. After copious hours of troubleshooting I learned that for some reason my CC Lanes are just set to 0 for no reason and I have to force them back to a non-zero value by inserting a MIDI-event on each track with CC-Data…

Often its seems as if Cubase just randomly decides not to work anymore, so I have to go on a troubleshooting spree in my limited time, killing any bud of inspiration or creativity insatntly and making the idea of working towards any kind of deadline laughable. Sometimes it feels as if some evil goblin just decides its time to press a button that will break something and stop me dead in my tracks.

So, I don’t mean to go on a prolonged rant, as I’m sure that there are already plenty of people that share my frustration but I’d rather ask any more experienced people about their perspective regarding the development of such software.

How are the priorities in weighed? How can be something so faulty be released to the public (including tons of professionals that use it to earn their daily bread) Why are so many customization options and tweaks in the preferences made available, when half of them seem to have the potential to break the whole thing? I mean I get it - Its nice to adapt Cubase to your workflow, but shouldnt the stability of the system come first?

Is the convenience for its users not a priority? Does it have to be so complicated? I feel like you shouldnt need a degree in rocket science just to assign a few knobs.

Maybe I am being unreasonable but I just feel overwhelmed at times. Please tell me if my perspective is valid in your opinion, if you’re experience with Cubase is similar. I don’t mean to poopies on Steinberg or Cubase, because I have produced all of my best work on it and love many of its functions, but I genuinely ask myself those questions and would love to hear others opinion.

If you gave someone a Clarinet they’d probably think it was Unintuitive and think…does it have to be this hard? …. yes…you get back what you put it…. like everyhting in life…

Cubase is Stable and works well.

No software is perfect… what we have now with curent computers and current software is absolutely amazing in 2025.

It’s not unreasonable to expect your DAW to “just work” so you can focus on making music, but it is unreasonable to conclude that it’s “faulty” just because everything isn’t working right out of the box.

Cubase 14 works fine if your system is properly configured. Your problems are most likely with your computer, hardware, MIDI-controller(s) OS, and/or configuration.

  • What’s your setup (RAM, CPU, OS, audio interface, storage, midi-controllers)?

  • Are you using any 3rd-party audio/midi software?

  • Are you using any free VST plugins? VST 2.x plugins?

  • Do you start new projects empty, or with a template?

  • Have you read the manual?
