Cubase VS Other Daws, missing features

As you probably already guessed (or maybe not) I couldn’t care less about your views on my posts. Gearspace has a very welcome “ignore” button, now that’s a feature request that should garner some applause over here.

Me wasting time replying to this childish nonsense is the same as Steinberg team wasting time building a clip launcher…

Not at all, and much of the music I make for money I know it’s nothing to write home about. Being honest. And sorry if I came across a bit harsh, not my intention, not to you, at least.

Sorry if I came across harshly, the whole discussion is not steared very well, and I got caught in the heat of the moment. My sincere apologies, back on constructive discussion.

For me, though something I have wanted for a long time is better curves in Keyroll lanes, and in Automation.

Why can’t we edit controllers like this? (FLstudio)

Also like discussed here:

The new Modulators are nice but they don’t allow for this kind of discreet editing.

Automation with these kind of curves/waveforms would be far more powerful.

thanks

Can you define Cubase’s “ethos” and Steinberg’s understanding of “relevance”?

I don’t try to “gotcha”.

I’m genuinely curious.

I’ll try to give my best about that: linear sequencing. For me it was always about that. Linear sequencing. Jumping from workstations (like the korg m1) to a computer was at the time a logical step. And, given that it was only midi for years, of course it lent itself to electronic music - well, everything done with Cubase was by definition electronic.

But the point remains: linear sequencing, focusing heavily on MIDI manipulation and editing (I still feel Cubase is superior in this regard to other daws due to its history) with a lot of add-ons through the years for proper recording and mixing of audio. Of course that’s my view at Cubase’s path through the decades. Like many here I tend to assume this as a universal truth

I can assume there won’t be much new in Cubase anymore. Some new plugins and little improvement on top? Yes. Some features that may require some code rewriting? No.

They cannot fix the jitters in the audio engine, because they afraid to touch the code created by the initial developers. So I don’t have high expectations…

What a flashback to start the new year! We had the very same discussion four years ago. I also started on Atari ST (with EDM…) and would love to see a kind of clip launcher to enhance my workflow. I tried it with Ableton, but its not efficient to transfer between different DAWs. I run NI Maschine as iVST to get some sort of clip launching. It’s not practical either. Back then, I sketched out an idea for a simple implementation.
As an EDM-oriented user, however, I sometimes feel like a second-class Cubase user in this forum…

Here is what I think would happen.

Clip launcher (Steinbergs version called Vari-Clip) added. A small vocal segment of Cubase users rejoice.

A week later: But Steinbergs Vari-Clip doesn’t do____. Steinbergs Veri-Clip needs_____. Why didn’t Steinberg just do Veri-Clip the way “we” want it to work which is like (choose any other clip launcer DAW) Why aren’t the Vari-Clip KC’s working? Why can’t we import the Live colors to make Veri-Clip look like Ableton Live?

1 month later after the first Clip Launcher update: They fixed this, but now that isn’t working. This is a complete Clip Launcher regression. The Clip Launcher is broken! Steinberg made it worse, and if they don’t fix it I’m moving to Live. I’ve been Clip Launching since the 80s and with my 40 year career in IT I’m done with Cubase.

Meanwhile, and naturally due to limited resources, a lot of other stuff that should have been addressed, doesn’t get done.

Can someone explain what clip launching is and how it works for composition?

(I used LIVE 10 years or so ago, exploring using it for live performances. We ended up just playing live with some elements on mini-disc.)

Maybe ReWire should make a come back…

Not opposed to a clip launcher but I’m not finding it’s absence gets in the way of making music. If I did I would probably do drums in Ableton and export the clips, or maybe use Geist 2, which is ancient, but still surprisingly decent for slicing/looping.

My splice integration is having a favorite folder for my splice directory in media bay and searching it the usual way e.g. “hat,” it works perfectly fine.

What I find more is useful in C15 is that the folder views are improved, and if I pick “green” for a new track it will automatically put it into the green folder. Also from C14 the ctrl+shift mouse to change volume, and volume curves. Also welcome updates to expression maps. These are huge time savers despite not having a lot of fanfare.

I liked the idea of ReWire and I’m not sure why Propellerhead/Reason Studios decided to pull the plug.
Ableton Link is the new ReWire as far as I understand but is unfortunately not supported in Cubase or Nuendo.

I’m sorry… What is a clip launcher?

Rewire was great - one of my fav trance producers was using it to rewire Fruity Loops drums into Cubase. It is very strange because many people were actually using it to ReWire Reason into a proper DAW, I can’t imagine it did wonders for their sales after it was discontinued..

Maybe Cubase will decide to support Link at some point - or now that I think about it I think Blue Cat's Connector - Audio and MIDI Streaming Plug-In (VST, AU, VST3, AAX) might also be a solution and isn’t very expensive. Same with Bom Shanka Machines - News - electrypnoseSync is out now!

If ReWire would be back I would consider buying Reason again. Last time I was using Reason version 2.5 or 3, before they changed the sequencer.

Cubase and Reason through ReWire was a nice combo.

Have you tried the reason-as-vst-plugin?

I thought that this concept was discontinued, but it looks like I remembered it wrong. I see that there’s a Reason Rack plugin. Cool. Since I’m already overloaded with plugins, I’ll wait until I have some cash to burn later this year to grab it

I don’t think Cubase needs clips Ableton style grid, I don’t know how much it is used in Logic or Studio One instead of Ableton.
