Cubase windowing still have bugs

I don’t use Musio that much even though I should, because there’s a lot of great stuff in there, and they made a lot of progress since they first launched it a few years ago.

Now, yesterday it occurred to me to duplicate a string section and use the Cinesamples Solo Strings, and even though I own the Kontakt versions, I figured Musio is mature enough to start using it more seriously.

Unfortunately there’s a giant bug, which may be caused by Musio or by Cubase, but I would bet it’s due to Cubase bugs with window size management in Windows. For one, this doesn’t happen at all in Fender Studio Pro 8, and there’s a long history of Cubase windows behaving in really bizarre ways, at one point it being the Key Editor (which seems rather stable now), and more recently mixer windows, which are not the chaotic mess that were in 2025 but still occasionally resizes itself with no user input just because it decides to.

So here’s what happens with Musio. When clicking on the instrument button in the track to open Musio, it already opens in a weird way, but at least it’s usable. The first time, that is:

That’s way larger than the default window size for it. But if you close the window and open it again, then it becomes larger, and each time you do that, it gets larger and larger until it’s a monstrosity that takes over the whole screen space:

It doesn’t even get constrained to the actual screen space you have at the moment, because the window size itself is far larger than the 3840x2160 pixels in each screen. The width of this window is way longer than the 7680 pixels across both screens (although having Windows scaling at 150% probably means the actual pixels used by the GUI are less than that), and the same for the height.

Musio has a menu item called “Reset Window Size”, which does just that, but next time you close the window and later open it again, it’s back to this pandemonium all over again.

You might say that I’m blaming Cubase for something that happens mostly in Musio, but like I said, this doesn’t happen with Musio in Fender Studio Pro 8, no matter how many times I open and close a Musio window. Besides that, the fact that I still see some Cubase native windows like the mixer enlarge themselves with no user input, tells me that Cubase still has bugs in its windowing system.

I understand, Windows 11 is a terrible OS, which Microsoft has been patching over the original Windows NT since the mid 90’s. It must be hard to keep up with all the constant changes in APIs and all that because Steinberg updated their code to work fine with the current Windows 11 build, then MS releases another build and screws up things all over again.

But at the same time, these glitches in the windowing system don’t happen in any other software I have, which doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen in any other software because I don’t own every program out there, but I have a good amount of them. So Steinberg needs to fix this ASAP, and when Microsoft screws up an update like they do all the time, well, it’s a matter of keeping up.

And it wouldn’t hurt to work hard on porting all their software to Linux, which by now is a very user friendly platform, especially in distros like ZorinOS, Mint and Ubuntu. It used to be an OS for geeks and nerds, but not anymore. It’s very stable and anyone can install it without having a degree in computer science.

Is the scaling for the window set at 0%?

It seems that that item in the menu that you show is only available in macOS, because in Windows that is not present, at least not in that menu:

That being said, the Application Scaling that I have in the Cubase preferences (under User Interface) is set to +25%, but there’s no way around that for me.

The scaling:
It’s in windows, but it depends on which version of cubase you have!

With me, always the latest version, unless I indicate it. I mean latest major version with all updates. 15.0.30.

But I just checked, and that setting is only available for HALion Sonic, perhaps some other VSTi, but not for Musio and Kontakt.
