Cubase's Search Results System Can't Distinguish a 1 From a 2

There is actually a preset called ‘Preset - 1’ which Cubase failed to display even though that is exactly what I typed in.
Wrong!

Your documentation of the problem doesn’t include the main information needed, which is a verbatim paste of the preset name you are searching for to verify no user error.

There could be an extra space in there, for example.

Does it appear when you search for the single word preset?

When searching, some characters have a special meaning, so-called Boolean Operators. The hyphen (-) is one of these and means that the following characters must not be included.
So if you are searching for files that have a hyphen in their name, put the search text in quotation marks. Or just simply avoid special characters in preset names.

Interesting. I’d always assumed this was just a simple search function.

Yeah it could be, especially since there is the Logical tab when one needs to apply special filters. On the other hand, it’s useful when we implement browsing searching through external apps.

Thanks for that information.
I still have some concerns about the search system though. It doesn’t seem to be able to filter out names which are obviously different to the name in the search field. Test B should be the only result showing if it were working as expected, no?
Wrong!

That is working as expected, yes. I think you meant to put that search string in quotes.

Yeah, it works if I put the search string in quotes. It’s the only search field on my entire system that requires quotes in order to isolate a file. Bit crap, IMO.

Especially funny since the search system in the rest of Cubase is very strict (key commands, logical editor presets, plugins)…

Could use more flexibility in those areas

Depends on the expectations…
The good news: The Boolean Text Search works as it is described in Cubase Help.
The bad news: There’s a sneaky thing about the (MediaBay-based) Text Search. The entered search text is not only searched in the Name attribute, but in all attributes of the media file!

Cubase Help says:
“The Search MediaBay field has the same function as the matches operator of the logical filter. However, the search is applied to all file attributes.” (!)

In practice (example above), this means that if you search for Test B (i.e. Boolean Search: Test and B), Test A and Test C will also appear in the result! Why? Because there is a b in the attribute Plugin Vendor of both presets, Test A and Test C ==> Fabfilter (!)

You should always bear this in mind when using the ordinary Text Search (i.e. by Attribute) in Cubase. If you want to be precise, you’ll have to either search for a single specific search string (in quotation marks) or use the Logical instead of the Attribute search.

Surprised no one mentioned it, but you should also check the left panel to ensure you are searching the folder(s) you want.

I’ve learned a couple new things on this thread and the very insightful responses, thanks!
